Tuere is not much science ii mv method of composting, eithe as regards the materials used o the manipulation of the ingred ieuts. 1 say this at the outset, s that 1 may head off carpin critics. Bnt if any of that clan insist upon saying that I don' understand the art of mixint c impost, and used many tilings ii mongrel mass that, were abso lutely worthless and not onl< simply produced bulk bnt gav' no chemical element that crop could use with benelit??1 that 1 have to say is. that it ma; be true, what he says. But, yet nevertheless, although, notwith standing, still my truck thriveoi the truck. What do we at ou house care if there is no uitrogan notaeh or lime?no ammonia o phosphate of any kind? no soda ginseng or camphor in it, if th potatoes rise many in a hill an< of large size; if the watermeloni grow so large that ten men cai st and aound one of them ; if th roasting ear stalks, with threi ears on each, grow so high that haVe to straddle one and walk 1 down to gather the succulen fruit. I have made this compost for th last five or six years and, witl one exception only, have foun it excellent for every kind o garden vegetables usually culti vated in our city lots.This excep t:on is the tomato. (I wanted t use the plural of that word, "tc luato," but I was doubtful abou rhe correct spelling. This compost may take ran as a general fertilizer. As fo corn, it is simply marvelous?i sandy or loamy soils?1 do no know how it would do in the iif country, blood-red land, lik that in Orange County, N. O., fo example.
