Sensation in Washington. / Report that Postmaster GenI eral Cortelyou is to be Prosecuted Causes Much Excitement and Comment. Washington, M:ucli 27.? Special to The News and Cornier : humors Irom New York to day th >t Cornelius N. Bliss, George 1',. Cortelyou aud George W. Pernins had been indicted there, or that warrants had been sworn out tor their arrests in connection with Mr. I'erkin's contribution o! the New York Lite Insurance Company's fund to the Republican national committee in the last campaign, created jireat interest in Washington. Postmaster Cortelyou \vn- besieged by interviewers, but j all he could say was he had not been informed (hat any action had been, or was to be taken agiinst him in New York. While lie declined to talk lor publication, jt was evident to Mr. CortelyoiPs i friends that he was deeply hurt over what these Iriends regarded as an apparent attempt to injure the Post muster General by con neding liis name with a criminal prosecution. There was much speculation in Congress and Adminstration circles as to what would he the attitude of Mr. Roosevelt if one of his Cabinet officers were arrested on a criminal charge. The opinion was practically unanimous that the President would insist on Mr. Cortelyou attending Cabinet meetings and continuing to serve as the head ol the pos'otliee department, and II * i ? wouia not consent to nave iur status changed in any degree while the prosecution was pending. According to the Washington view, an indictment ot Corteyou for receiving campaign contributions that might have been taken from trust funds would be an annoying procedure. Those who are aware of Cortelyou's method of conducting the national com mil tee in the campaign of 1004 i are confident that, should it he-! come necessary to do so, he would he able to show a clean bill of health in regard to both his official and personal connec tion with campaign contribu lions.
