The Public Roads. Another Interesting andTimely Article on the Subject b> Surveyor Belk, Who is Doing so Much to Encourage Road Improvement ir Lancaster County-?His Views as to the Value oi Terraces--Advice to Farmers. Mr. Editor: To those who art interested in ^ood roads, iuelud ing many who naveot late askec me so kindly to write up out roads n, will 1 venture a lew brief notes. And I offer an apology lor the space 1 am tak ing up, to those who are not in terested in better roads. I appreciate the many kind things said of my last article on Good Roads. And I am glad tn find so many people willing to do all they can to get better roads, 1 actually believe the majority of our people now want better roads and with their growing interest taken in our roads I am euro our roads are going to be worked better. It is gratifying to find our present graud jury is so much inter aDln,l ; ? ...I., \\T ill ^v/uu lunuo. If C JJUII1 mend them for the course they are taking and hope they will cootmue to ask for better roads until we get t hem. It will encourage our supervi sor to do his best when he finds we are so much interested in / (hp rnnrlu wo haro fn Iroual We can't expect the beet road work in any section of the county unless 1 lie best citizens in each section are themselves interested in better roads. Thus it is necessary for all our people to be in terested in getting better roads in order to get the best results ; and a good way to show our interest is to work our own section. Ke sides working our section well, we can speak kindly of those whc are doing good work, ask al] those who have not worked the four, six or eight days, as is no. cessary, to kindly join in with us and lend u helping hand in getting tho tiling sc much needed ?i^ond muds I know it is now time to be planning our tarms and terracing our lands and no one wants to quit his farm to work a road 1 wouldn't want to do it myself: but if any overseer has neglected bis road, or has run over it only hurriedly, it may be he can worn it wet days, and if not,we hope he will not let August slip by with out giving it a good reasonable working. * I wish every overseer in th* coun'v wouhl hand in a list ol dour, six, or eight days worked uf to the last ol August in the veai 19(W That is not unreasonable Some sections have already worked four or six dayn. Oihcrs have planned lo work the full eight days. 11 would be but fail foi all sections to work the lawful number ol d iys, or so many day* as is necessary to give good road->. And our supervisor might make this compulsory. Why can't we expect this? It all oni overseers will do this I am surf it will make our supervisoi ''smile," "smole," and "grin" all j over his face. Yes, it will make! ! him feel good all the rest <?f his ! lite. And remember, if vou make! .1 the supervisor feel good > on w?li j I r' be doins your duty ami pi *a^in'g everybody interested in gcod J * i roads. *1 It mi slit be encouraging to, i others to kin \v tha1 the sec'ion of the Chesterfield Road from A (tills Creek t > Dixie, from Dixie tr r i to Dwight ami from here 1 a ling c on to Tradesville have been ' 1 worked the best in ten yeais; and the Hay Road, leading bv t, Bethlehem on towards Trades ' f] ville, has been put in real tree I . fix. 1 b< lieve this last named ro ?d lias the prettiest piece ol work that has ever been done in our county. The overseer and his ?, l 1 - ,1 l. nanus ceriaun.v u?eiv? luucn q praise. We find tlie roads leading n to Tradesville worked good, and , we find that her people voted in I r 1 n a four mill tax without a dissent- w, i o nig vote, and we also find that , > .J Tradesville did so for a flourish> iug school. Can't you make the ^ application? I know of other sec ^ tions that have done extra good , . , , A work, and I tor one am very much encouraged. The board or plank fixed on a common i w plough stock, or on a two-footed ^ plough stock iust like a board to . b cover cotton seed, etc , only a j larger one, does the nicest, eas- ^ iest, and prettiest road work of any thing I have ever seen. Try ^ it. I am also interested m larm I 81 ing but will only say a few words j about it now. I want to ask all those who p, have not tried to terrace, to try _ I ll it. It is the best thing I know of to preserve your laud. About ^ ten years ago I had a ten-acre r field well ditched by an expert, 1 and it was well done. I run all 1 ray rows with the ditches and ray land soon got red and spotted with gullies. Now it is in broom- ^ 1 sage and gullies; but had I ter^ rn nnrl if if 111 < ! n Am Un?n I. /> ^ n i auvvi n., ii viuiu nww iiftvc UCCII as good or perhaps better than when ditched. For six years I ^ ' have been terracing my lands ' and they are now in better fix ? ^ with far less washes than when 1 h begun terraces. An occasional b ditch is some times a necessity. " 1 The terrace is largely used all b 1 over the countv, but manv con1 demn it for lack of a fair trial. I d think I have traveled over more " 1 farms than any other man in the g " county and I know it is a good a 1 thing. s One more note and I will e ? close. And that is, plant plenty tl ' of corn, peas, potatoes and every p thing else you actually need at c ' home, and don't Irv to msikn j?11 ? s cotton. IIoM what cotton yon fi liave on hand till next crop is planted and chopped, lor it will fi be actually needed to run the p ' mills; and should the season not o t be favorable lor planting or t > chopping; or should there come t " killing Iros's ol much note, then ? . there is a chance lor a big rise. 1 a tie) ieve cot ton will be 12^ cents] t .lOine time bet ween no?? and tne j t tir t oi September, and may l>e j t -1 more, dim 01 course we can I telli{. I ! what, cotton will do. A few multi1 w millionaires can raise the price if v I they put their money in it, but I c I don't believe all the bears can f ' put it much lower till another " crop is in sight. v 5 T. M. Hoik.
