Lust night Bishopville was in a turmoil ol exoit ment. A bMid of armed men r< de info the town with the announced purpose ol lynching a negro, Jim DessanMire, in jail. The sheriff had cotton word of the attempt and prepared for it. As tne mob came tip he and several deputies opened uro and the mob responded, but evident ly feeling th<?t they were not equal to an attack on a fortilied piaee they withdrew. As a mailer of fact, it is said, that the sheriff' and his posse tired over the heads of ttie mob, but that a as sufficient, as the sequ 1 showed. The town naturalh was much aroused in the imme diute vicinity ot tlie jail. Other citizens not knowing what whs eoui? on rang church bells so as to bring out nil the male inhabi tants. There was the intell ect excitement, but no bloodshed. The 1> ucliimr party disappeared quicker than it came, and affairsoon alter quieted down. Three weeks ago tin- negro in j il attempted to assassinate a Mr. Manic-, -hooting him through lie lungs.
