A Disgraceful Affair. Two Legislators Fight at the Closing of the Session? They are Said to have been "Fortified against the Cold Wave" and were Therefore in no Fix for Effective Fighting. Columbia special to Augusta Chronicle: The tension between the two houses of the general assembly over tlie dispensary situation was not entirely tree from a mark of violence after all. The incident, though lor a time it looked as if it would result seriously, passed oil linaliy without attracting much attention in the city. In fact it was traceable more to the direct internal application of the dispensary than to any psychological condition brought .about by warring opinion as to how the whiskey problem should be solved for the commonwealth at large. It was almost a case ot spontaneous combustion. The clash was in the nature ol a fist light in the main lobby under the dome skylight in Irontof the library doors between a senator and a member - C A- 1- 1 I 1 1 ? 1 01 lilt' Jii)use, ami n-ippeiieu ttuuui 2 o'clock Sunday morning, (though (fie legislative clock was standing dutifully at a lew minutes lo midnight as a result of (lie sergeant at-arms' frequent application of his long pole to the hands ) Both were a bit ''woozv" and therefore not entirely responsible, as was the condition ot a number of oilier members who had taken bracers against the cold wave while waiting to ratily ihe last batch of acts. There had been more or less loud talking, stumbling rouml and bragging about the relative astuteness and wisdom of the two houses, when the senator applied a vile epithet to the member of the house, who promptly knocked him down. The representative is tall and powerful, but he is not fro queutly placid and dignified; in fact his feelings are easily and profoundly stirred either by his own oratory or that of other members of the house. The senator had not finished his insult when the representative's long arm shot out and his fi t cut under the senator's nose with the impressive force of a locomotive driving rod. Hut t lie senator's friends did not have to pick him up; he was on his leet in a jifly lunging al the tall one, who was prancing about with a dozen members swinging to him They were dragged apart, but they could not bo quieted until they h id boon taken out of each other's view. After l heir friends had labored with them about an hour, pacifying them and pumping them lull of advice and patriot ism and other things the belli gerents were brought together again for a peace conference. Hut it would have taken u ore than a Roosevelt to get 'ho e two together. The negotiations had hardly opened betore the senator punched the representative in the nose, hopping up to get to him. That dreadful long arm went out again and the spiki or caught e 1 loo1' from his mouth mi (1 11 s i j Jus hand.
