Horse Notes. By Shepherd. Corn meal alone is not as safe a grain for horses as cats. (/lover hay is just the thing for the brood horses. The horse needs daily exercise and likeH a variety of food. A good night's rest is always an important item and especially so with the work teams. The ease and comfort of the horse and consequently its profit to its owner are increased by a well fitting harness. Breeding inferior horses is infinitely more unwise and unprofitable than the cropping of poor land. The nearer a home is to the ground the less it will cost to keep him. There is no danger of handling or feeding a colt too easily. Give the horses plenty of oppor tunity for exercise whenever the wheather is favorable. Do not overwork young horses. Mature horses are better able to do the hardest of the *ork. Horses are usually gentle by nature and made otherwise by careless training. It does not use up a horse to be driven fast if he is properly driven. The successful trainer can tell kL. i.: _ i i *1.-1 uy uuw ii i n uwrifB urives me amount of work he should have. Adjust the doubletree to correspond with the strength of the horses which make up the teams. Nothing is as good as an earth floor for all animals that have tender feet. The farm that has the vicious horse very often has the ill natured man. All shoes should have a level bearing on the foot extending from the toe to the heel. The width of a shoe need be no more than is necessary to cover the bearing surface. i:-i 4. _ i-i- - I J. For city markets horses must have size for work, both size and Btyle for coaches, and for the racetrack and sporting market they must have speed. No advantage follows the re tention of shoes on a foot for more than four weeks as the growth of the horn in that time produces a disproportionate hoof. If you want your coltR to have good solid bono, sound joints and hoof, give them oats and wheat A L I A l.'nt wiin out nine corn. When fattening hogs, make them eat all (hey will. In a measure, inbreeding ? <th out Rejection is disease breeding. ! Early maturity is a merit of the unproved breeds that needs good feed to develop. For the very best results in Bwine feeding, only breeders should be kept through the wint er. When hogs are being fattened they should be fed all that they will eat up clean. Grouud oats is one of the very best feeds for growing pigs as they contain the elements neces sary for the proper development of bone and muscle. If a sow is well matured before being bred she will not only prove a better breeder but will bring a much better quality of pigs. While the pig is one of the most profitable farm animals the amount of profit he can ne made to bring will be governed largely by the manner in which he is bred up. Ag an argument in favor of the be?t treatment it may be said that disease seldom starts in a neighborhood in the herds which have the most careful treatment. When the pigs from an old sow fail to grow as fast as their companions from young sows, it is an unmistakable indication that the old mother is failing. As a rule, the best gains come from hegs so anxious at meal time for their food that they show their greedy appetite by squealing. In breeding hogs, it is quite an item to retain all the good qualities and get rid of those that are undersirable as much as possible.?Live Stock Journal. Ij. P.
