Martha Dendy Middle School student Tonia Werts receives an award from
state wildlife officer Charlie Snider for the selection of her essay as best in the
junior division of a statewide contest concerning hunter safety. The contest was
sponsored by Marlin Firearms Co. Snider teaches hunter safety courses in
upstate schools. Shown with Werts are her English teacher, Valerie Jones, and
Assistant Principal Bill Alexander who teaches the school’s hunter safety
course. Ionia’s mother is Willie Mae Werts, a Lydia spinner. Ionia’s father,
James, is a Clinton maintenance employee.
