This month, the Clothmaker interviewed several volunteers who contribute their time, energy, skill and enthusiasm to YMCA Little League teams.) During Little League season in Clinton, Larry Smith, No. 2 Supply Room; Steve Fennell, Accountant; Charles Mabry, Bailey Supply; and Brian Shealy, Lydia Maintenance, soend much of their frep time coaching teams of Little League baseball players. Some of their involvement comes from the fact that many of the coaches have sons Little League age?others from a keen and sincere interest in watching a youngster develop into a real baseball and sports enthusiast. "I see each player asan individual with a different outlook on sports." says Steve Fennell. a former 1969 Clinton High baseball player. "I like to feel I'm working with them and I'm part of the team. Most important, you've got to look at each player's abilities individually, and then put it all together as a team. If a player makes an error in the field, I give him encouragement to work harder to overcome any weakness in playing that he may be experiencing." The local Little League teamsare sponsored by the Clinton YMCA in cooperation with supporting businesses. The program's main goal is to develop leadership and sportsmanship with the young players. "It's amazing to watch the 'kids' build confidence." says Larry Smith, who assists Fennell in coaching the Red Carpet team. "We attempt to teach the players how to play the game and that includes both how to win and how to lose. American Federal Little League team is coached by Charles Mabry. Mabry, a participant on several YMCA Softball teams, finds his coaching experience very rewarding. "My reward is watching a player hit his first base hit, catch his first fly ball, or even, for some, play their first game," added Mabry. "I strive to tell my players there is a great reward in winning," says Fennell, "but there's nothing wrong with losing as long as you have done your best and played the game fairly," continued Fennell. "It's important that each of usascoaches develop among our players a positive attitude." * All IKa Pli a4a? ? 41 1 nn ui me v^iimuii dgree uiere 5 Previous M Since inception of the scholarship prog Gl ram in 1956, the Bailey Foundation has awarded scholarships and loans with a cost commitment exceeding $850,000 ni Previous scholarship recipients by the years are: "f 1957- Martha Joan Reeder Pitts and Shirley Dunaway Sanders. 0\ 1958?Cecil Davenport and Mary Cunningham Jackson. 1959?Beth Trammell and Carolyn Hairston.
