For the significance of Christmas is that it stresses for us the idea of the brotherhood of man. Indeed, the Christmas story is the story of man's brotherhood. We live in a time, however, when at home as well as abroad, there are attacks on that idea; when the worth of the individual is being questioned or even flatly denied: when the freedom of thought is being questioned; when attempts are made to stifle free inquiry. If we are to maintain the ticklish balance, which is our heritage in this country. between that freedom that comes from the innate worth of the individual and the orderly processes of a society composed of such free individuals, we must gain a new insight into the nature of our responsibilities. Men stay free only so long as they guard their freedom carefully. We cannot keep our freedom by gradually sacrificing it bit by bit to fear or expediency. In the great battle which is going on in the world between our concept of J --.I- ! -I- i ? J - -? uciuuLidcy ariu inai wmcn is expounded bv communism, we accomplish nothing ?or worse than nothing?by a negative approach. Either our way of life is marked by a full participation of us all based on real belief in the worth of individual men and women, or it is a sham or a mere piece of machinery. The coming of the Christ Child which we commemorate at Christmas is the basis for our faith in man as well as our faith in God. Pr7T==^l V -|
