They have not applied or Social Security benefits ecause they are not ready o retire and believe that hey must be retired before hey can file for any paynents or benefits. The Disrict Manager for Social lecuriey advises these peoile to contact their social ecurity office now. There are several reasons yhv a waffe earner or self mployed person, who is tear 65 should contact his ocial security office and iiscuss his individual case, le advises everyone to conact the social security ofice at least three months efore attaining the age of 5, and reminds that this nay be done by telephone. One of the reasons is that person who is 65 or older nay be able to receive ome benefit payments ven though he or she is till working for over 1,680 a year. It is usually dvisable for the person to ;i _ _ .1^1 -i A - - ue a ciaim, ODiam necesary documents, and have he claim processed in adance of retirement. He can then get benefit >ayments refigured to inlude earnings after the laim was filed. Another ;ood reason for filing early, ven if still working is to lualify for Medicare beneits and this is important o everyone who is 65 or lder. The Social Security Adninistration cannot take ny action to award beneits to anyone until a claim 5 tiled. It is therefore lm>ortant he advised, that all lersons who are within hree months of age 65 and ertainly if they are aleady age 65, to contact heir social security office romptly, even though they re still working. The peo >le in the social security iffice will give proper adice for each individual ase and make certain that 'ou do not lose benefits to vhich you may be entitled.
