V/HAT ABOUT
INFLUENZA?
cj. now is mriuenza spread'.'
A. When a person has influenza,
or is just coming
down with it, the
fluids in his nose and
mouth contain viruses.
They are expelled into
the air when he sneezes,
coughs, talks or laughs.
Then they get into the
noses and m o u t h of
other people and cause
disease.
Q. Why do some people say
you should stay out of
crowded places during
an epidemic?
A. When there are a number
of people in relatively
close quarters like
classrooms and buses
the air can become
heavily loaded with
virus particles during
an epidemic. It s almost
impossible to stay out of
t lie path of coughs and
sneezes.
Q. Will a flu shot build up
your resistance to colds?
A. No. It is effective only
against influenza viruses,
and sometimes
against only one particular
viral strain.
Q. Can 1 gel flu from the
vaccine?
A. The virus used in producing
the vaccine has

a reaction to the

same thing.
Q. Can some people get
other allergic reactions
to flu shots?
A. Because the virus used
in making the vaccine is
grown in eggs, people

Q. Can't they make a vaccine
that doesn't cause
reactions?
A. New procedures have
been developed to remove
the proteins that
cause allergic reactions
from the vaccines. They
are just coming into use.
Q. Will vaccine protect me
against "intestinal flu"?
A. So-called "intestinal flu"
may be caused by a variety
of bacteria and
perhaps by some viruses,
known or unknown. Influenza
vaccine is effective
only against viruses
which do not cause "in

Q. IIow long does immunity
last after a flu
shot?
A. The best immunity lasts
for about six months
and can be restored by a
"booster shot." Because
we can't predict what
changes will occur in
the v irus strains or
when, a vaccine that
lias beeen good for several
years may suddenly
need to be up-dated.
