A CO M P A V Y ? A Taxpayer's?ss? Nliin's (woman's!) best friend at income t.ix time may we!l be an adding machine, if he mnltes out his own rot urn. says one of the nation's top tax consultants. "The Internal Revenue Service finds some kind of error in at least one of every five of the 70 million income tax returns filed annually," Si,ys Richard Block, who heads over 1,500 tax offices in <15 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii. Most errors made by individuals in their returns are "mechanical," Block re|*>rts-simple mistakes in arithmetic. Such errors are more critical now lor taxpayers, because of the increased use of computers in checking individual returns. The mechanical marvels speed up Mil' process, but they are more apt to "spit out" returns that are incorrect. Computers o. r^O /> . &msm OR SAFETY PE Stainless Steel CARE IN ACT ? ?*?* iPMMWPW ! ? Among legitimate deductions ' which slip most taxpayers'minds, Block consultants list property losses, failure to file joint returns, not listing all contributions, sick pay exclusions, ** hospital insurance, child care ^ exemptions, or retirement in- ^ 8 come. A man may list expenses for medicine and medical care but ^ but forget transportation costs to the doctor totaling much more. Or he may overestimate sales taxes but forget to deduct personal property tax. Or list cash contributions and lorget $100 worth of clothing donated to the church. Part of this is due to the confusion felt by the average layman when faced with an income tax return, and his lack of knowledge as to what deductions he is entitled to. "If the government simplifies income taxes one more time, they'll get so complicated no one will be able to make out a i return," Hlock quips.
