A number of these young men and women have been employed in the mills during the past summer where they have gained valuable work experience and earned money to aid with college expenses. Eight of these young people will receive financial assistance for their advanced education as Mercer Silas Bailey Scholarship recipients. r|'U 1 C" pV iir l rv ?? n xi no v uai o vv i 11 ll c l d, Lydia's Frances Taylor and Philip King were chosen, as were previous year's winners, Myra Snelgrove, William Glenn, Beth Trammell, Carolyn Hairston, Cecil Davenport, Mary Cunningham, Martha Joan Pitts and Shirley Sanders, on the basis of character, high school scholastic records, qualities of leadership, participation in student and community activities, their goals in life and financial need. Each is permitted to pursue his chosen course of study at the South Carolina College or University of his choice. Parents of these young people are justly proud of this fine group, however, 'heir return to school is met with mixed emotions. They are pleased that they were able to make this opportunity available but regret having them away from home for the semesters ahead. Both gave informative and interesting presentations on "Highway Safety." They asked for the support of all employees in helping reduce highway injuries and deaths. "If wr> wprp just half as successful as you in industry in preventing accidents we would save hundreds of lives in South Carolina every year," Sergeant Smith said. "The lack of Courtesy, just plain consideration of and for others, is one of the leading causes of automobile accidents and deaths," according to Sergeant Fallaw.
