r*cu Safety Responsibility Law South Carolina Safety Responsibility law has been changed and strengthened, effective January 1, 1960. Its provisions can be very severe for those who insist upon owning or operating a motor vehicle without liability insurance. You must be able to comply with this law or stand to lose your driver license and vehicle license. Therefore, read this and take all steps necessary to protect your license privileges under the new law. What The New Law Provides The purpose of the new law is to protect all persons against financially irresponsible drivers with whom they may become involved in traffic nrridnnts An irresnonsi ble driver is one who causes accidents and is unable to pay for the damages brought to others. A vehicle owner usually gets needed protection for himself, while protecting others, by obtaining liability insurance meeting requirements of the law. The new law requires liability insurance (or other forms of acceptable proof) providing $10,000 coverage for injury or death to one person, $20,000 for injury or death to more than one person, and $5,000 for property damage in any one accident. GEMS OF THOUGHT ENVY There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance. ?Ralph Waldo Emerson If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears. ?Glenn Clark iLnvy always implies conscious inferiority wherever it resides. ?Pliny To envy's own hell, justice consigns the lie which, to advance itself, breaks God's commandments. ?Mary Baker Eddy If we did but know how little some enjoy of the great things that they possess, there would not be much envy in the world. ?Edward Young The most common disguise of envy is in the praise of what is subordinate. ?Washington Allston Sty? #trrti ABOUT YOU SAFETY RES ^ LAW... (Enmpatty You Must Report Accident < It is a serious matter to fail < to report any accident in ] which you are involved, i either as a driver or vehicle owner, if the accident results in property damage of $25 or WITHIN DAYS more, or injury or death to anyone. Failure to make such a report in writing within 5 days, regardless of who was at fault, calls for suspension of your driver license and vehicle license. This report must contain a statement as to your insurance status. The report must be filed with the State Highway Department in Columbia, S. C., and must be made even if an officer has already reported the accident. Report forms are obtainable at all sheriffs', city police or highway patrol offices. Proof Must Be Maintained For Five Years Persons involved in this law must maintain proof of their ability to respond for possible future damages in accidents for at least a fiveyear period. Failure to do so results in automatic withdrawal of their driving and motor vehicle registration privileges. No insurance policy written in compliance with the new law may be for a term of less than one year. Added Insurance Feature Insurance companies writing liability insurance policies under the South Carolina law must offer as optional afte, January 1, 1960, an endorsement which would protect insured vehicle owners or drivers against uninsured owners or drivers. Such enThe Secret < Someone once asked a successful man the secret of his success. "I'll tell you,'' he replied, "It was a small trick I always played on myself. I pretended that 1 owned the business. No matter where I worked, I pretended 1 owned the place ?lock, stock, and barrel." Isn't it strange? At home we worry if we leave one little light on all night, or if our property becomes run down, or if we hire someone who does a sloppy job. But at the mill, we sometimes waste light and power and equipment and material and time and workmanship. This waste can amount to hundreds of dollars and we never bat an eye. How can we do this? Because we have no proprietary interest in the business. We think of the company as "it": any profit or loss as "theirs". At home if I waste. I am wasting my money. I don't seem to understand that when I waste at the mill. I am also wasting niv time, mv job security, mv opportunity for advancement, my future. filtpa 3n 3 MARCH. 1960 dorsement must be a part of each policy written in compliance with the law on or after January 1, 1961. Important That You Have Insurance It is now highly essential that every vehicle owner and drive have liability insurance. It is a serious matter to be without insurance, even for a short period of time. Just one hazardous traffic law violations or one small accident can cost you your vehicle license and driver license if you don't have insurance. Uninsured Motorists Pay $15 Fee Beginning with the issuance of licenses for the 1961 Motor Vehicle License year, if you do not have motor vehicle liability insurance meeting state requirements, you must pay, at the time you get your new license plates, a fee of $15 in addition to your motor vehicle license fee. Payment of this fee does not give you liability insurance. Its purpose is to protect motorists who do have proper insurance against damages caused by uninsured motorists. It works this way. Fees collected are turned over to insurance companies to defray, or reduce, the costs which insured motorists must r?n V for a nlanco in tVinin ??"? surance policies giving protection against damages caused by uninsured motorists. Of course, if an insured motorist is at fault in an accident he will not be paid damages from the Uninsured Motorists' Fund.
