" Veteran is invited nml he in K' " II urged to bring his wife audi children. A very attractive' program has heen arranged, and in this program, time and opportunity will ho given to such veterans as may desire to speak, n June the third has become a fixed asset of the old soldiers, and that day in Pickens is an\ nually turned over to them for ' their enjoyment, aided by everything that the Daughters of vv.u,v,ruu, * ail uu rui isiii'ii I pleasure. This year, each veteran is especially urged t<> bring Ms family, ami the good ladies of the family, ami of every family desiring to contribute to the success of the day, are urged to bring a basket and spread it with the baskets contributed locally in order to swell the supply of the common table. 1 iet every good lady in the county who feels an interest in the comfort and happiness of the veterans of the civil war take thought- and send to Pickens 011 June the third a basket, of good things for this pic nic, and spread it with the provisions contributed from other sources. This will be appreciated by the 'Veterans and by the ladies of Pickens Chapter as well, who have learned to count upon the generous contributions from their friends from every section \ of the county. This is an occasion in which \ v everybody may take pride. To -i-- do honor to these old soldiers is a work of pleasure and of love. >> It matters not what views one may have entertained, or may now be entertained, of the l.?tc war between tlie States, or how time has served to heal the hurts of former years, a soldier respects the valor and courage of a foe, and comrades know V one another's courage; and the descendants of those heroes can do no better work than give some measure of t ribute to the fortitude of ;i people who fought and sacrificed and suffered for what they knew to be right. r , j- 11 net. everyoouy conn; to 1'ickens on June the third (Friday) bring your basket, spread it with the good things that will be provided by the good ladies of Pickens for the pleasure of the old confederate soldiers whose ranks are thinning fast, let us see them once more ML this thin, gray line under ^Punand of W. A name for our home or farm gives it a special individuality. Our horses, cows, dogs and other stock very often have their : names and it is proper that they should, but the farm or house < for a generation or more may i dimply he called the Jones I place or Smith farm according ; to the title of the present or past 1 owner who happened to impress 1 his individuality on the community. There is such a wide field of choice in naming the < farm or house that it would seem that any one could he suit- f ed although the name should P.i\ 1TV UAYYio ano/'iul f5f nnao rw. An appropriate 11 name for a place will add a charm to it not to be obtained in any other way. If we soleet t a name for our placo character- * istic of it we will often take . more interest in it and endea vor | to make the surroundings in t keeping with the name. "Dad, Here's To You."' We happened in a home the 1 other night and over the parlor < door saw the legend worked in letters of red, "What is Home |' Without Mother?" Across the room was another brief, "God Bless Our Home." Now, what's the matter with "God Bless our Dad?" lie gets up early, lights the fire, boils j an egg, and wipes oil' the dew i of the dawn with his boots while. many a mother is sleeping, lie makes the weekly handout for the butcher, the grocer the milkman and baker, and his pile is badly worn before he has been home an hour. If there is a noise during the ; night dad is kicked in the back j and made to go downstairs to| find the burgular and kill him. ; Mother darns the socks, hut dad bought thorn in the first place I and the needles and the yarn; afterward. Mother does n]> the fruit: well, dad bought it all,! and jars and sugar cost like t he mischief. Dad buys the chickens for the Sunday dinner, carves them himself and draws the neck from the ruins after everyone else is served. "What is home without a Mother;" Yes, that is allright: but what is home without a father; Ten chances to one it's a hoarding house, i? ji ? ? iamor is under a slab and the landlady is the widow.
