The first track of the album, “Waiting,” kicks it off with a quiet lead-in that explodes into a delightful bomb constructed from the most volatile components of rock. The harmonies are flawless and would remind people of Weezer’s “Blue Album.” Power chords pump from the guitars and the drums keep a strong pulse of percussion that drives the song until silence indicates the end. Another outstanding song is “Blackout,” which slows down a bit and gives the album a nice mid tempo centerpiece. This song is a wonderfully constructed lyrical piece. The chorus bursts forth saying, “How many times will it take to cover up the past mistakes?” It’s a song about a broken relationship that is trying tc come back together, but the other person wants to keep blaming you for things. It’s a song about being helpless . in that situation. The past is the past, and after a certain amount of time you can only apologize for it so much. To sum up the message of this song, the abstract would read, “I love you. You love me. I did you wrong. I’ve paid for it. So when can I start loving you again and making you happy, ‘cause I’m the only one who can do that?” If you know someone going through this rough situation, buy them this CD and leave them alone with incense burning and a ' flower. Another song worth mentioning is “The Legend of Pegleg Sullivan.” It’s, a story about the great Chicago fire of 1871. The song tells about a gentleman named Pegleg Sullivan who bought his “one-way ticket straight to hell” in starting the disaster by setting a small fire, which the wind blew all over the city. This song has fun lyrics with a more punk-based backbeat that would remind people of early Green Day, before they left Lookout! Records and became a major label act. So this weekend, while you’re worrying about exams, get blister’s “Before the Blackout.” Then have a pants-optional party and invite all of your friends. Get you favorite brew (if you get Blue Moon please invite this columnist) and then party and rock out. Because that’s what life’s all about, right? College is the best years of our lives (hopefully), so take every chance to melt your face with rock. But please remember to put water on the Slip N’ Slide, or at least have a pack of ice waiting for you after you lose your nips to the fiery plastic that covers your lawn. Comments on this story? Cruise has been made fun of too many times for it to still be comical. Rent the actual scary movies this film satirizes and make fun of them.
