The fifth element was the development sites that will be available in the area to businesses and companies, and the final element was a park that will be the created along the river that will have an amphitheatre, bike paths and fountains and statues. “It will be a westward facing park, a sunset park,” Galehouse said. The park will have three main areas: the Senate Street Landing, the Greene Street Landing and the Wheat Street Landing. The Senate Street Landing plans are the re opening of the canal and a ferry reconnecting the sides of the river. The Greene Street Landing is the main area of the park with the amphitheatre. Sasaki also wants to use the current Amtrak lines to create a station near the park to allow people to access the park via train. “We want to connect "the park to the public transportation,” Galehouse said. The Wheat Street Landing will include the area around the new baseball stadium. The plan will cost about $108 million. The waterfront area will account for about $86 million of the budget, and Innovista will cost about $22 million. However, the property taxes from the new real estate will bring in an extra $17.7 million per year. The funding for the project will come from a combination of sources, including state funding, taxes and federal funding via the Army Corps of Engineers’ Water Resources Development Act. “Based on our experience it is very achievable,” Galehouse said. While they did not discuss a specific timeframe for the project, they talked about 15-year increments for funding. Sasaki has had plenty of experience creating a “dynamic waterfront.” The company has worked on the parks in Charleston and Indianapolis. However, both were much smaller than the planned area for Columbia. The focus of the development is to create an aesthetically pleasing area that will emphasize the river. However, issues such as creating adequate parking make that difficult to achieve. The Sasaki plan is to hide the parking garages in the middle of the blocks, so buildings surround them. They also plan to have an underground parking garage , near the river. Members of the audience seemed enthusiastic about the plan. “I can’t wait 15 years,” said one audience member. “This holds the potential to transform our city,” Coble said. “Now is the time, the place is here.” Comments on this story? Monica Phillips, a third year psychology student, is a member of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA).and was promoting Earth Day by selling jewelry at their booth for The Hope Chest Fund. “The Hope Chest is a fund at USC to provide money for all women who need restraining orders or need to be relocated from their husbands,” Phillips said. Another booth at the festival was an enormous contraption with Styrofoam plates from the Russell House hanging on it. “All of those Styrofoam plates hanging are just from breakfast and lunch,” Blitch said. “It is symbolizing all of the people who could have used plates, but used the Styrofoam plates instead. It just shows how carefree people are with our environment.” Comments on this story? E-mail gamecocknetvs@gwm.sc.edu .
