SHOWCASE • COnTDUCDFROfni Although the program might seem like a way to channel money from alumni, Medlin said it was not. “(The session) is just a service to provide for our alumni. We’re not taking any kind of money for this program,” Medlin said. “We’d love their children and grandchildren to become future Gamecocks.” The program is only being pushed toward alumni members. There is no indication that the program will continue or be expanded to other families in the future. Created by the Carolina Student Alumni Association, the program is part of the USC Showcase, an open house for alumni to see the changes in the university. Students will also be able to speak with admissions officers in a question-and answer session about various subjects including searching for the right college — even if it isn’t USC. Middle school children, usually between the ages of 10 and 13, will be advised about the importance of getting ready for higher education. “It’s never too early to prepare for college,” Medlin said. “You have people that wait too late, and they may get in a bind if they wait until the last minute.” Marilyn Hatcher, head counselor at St. Apdrews Middle School, said sixth grade was too young to learn about admissions. “I would say not sixth graders, 12 years old would be the youngest with this group, Hatcher said. “Sixth graders are still so much like fourth- and fifth-graders; their attention span is too short.” Jason Wheeler, a lourth year chemistry student, said the admissions office was taking pointers from companies. “Believe it or not, admissions is a business,” Wheeler said. “You have to start the brand recognition early.” The admission session begins at 10:30 a.m. at McKissick Museum. Other Showcase activities include tours of residence halls and performances by various USC groups. Comments on this story?
