Gamecocks blast Wofford Terriers 13-1 at Same Frye Carly Reed THE GAMECOCK The Gamecocks baseball team defeated the Wofford Terriers 13-1 on Tuesday night at Sarge Frye Field. USC took the lead at the bottom of the second. Wofford came back to tie 1-1 in the top of the third. Robbie Grinestaff was walked in the third inning with the bases loaded and had a double in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dan Luczack relieved Harris Honeycutt after he pitched four innings for the Gamecocks. Andy Lambert and Kyle Brown both pitched one inning and Will Atwood pitched two. “Hitting is a game where time after time it can humble you ... but we played well tonight.” Tanner said. Michael Campbell also contributed to the five runs in the third inning with a single and had another one in the fourth. Reese Havens had a double in the second inning, a single in the sixth and a third hit in the bottom on the eighth. “We prepare for every game we play and you have to guard against any type of let down,” Tanner said. The Gamecocks also scored one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Comments on this story? They played for themselves, for the self satisfaction in knowing that their fighting had paid off. A win Thursday night against Michigan would give USC and Odom back-to-back NIT titles — certainly not the mark of an elite program but enough to show the true grit of this team. Odom has proved, once again, that he does his best coaching in the postseason, having his team prepared for every game despite having only one or two days rest in between. The Gamecocks had only eight scholarship players on the bench at Madison Square Garden last night. Ousmane Konate and Keving Palacios were here in Columbia nursing injuries, and Antoine Tisby has been suspended^ indefinitely. You couldn’t tell by watching last night’s game how much the Gamecocks were missing. Renaldo Balkman made up for it with 23 points. Brandon Wallace made up for it with 19. With the direction (Spurrier) has been looking in, Gary is going to be able to step right in and be a leader immediately.” Gray, currently a junior at RNE, hopes to graduate high school in December and enroll at USC in January, allowing him to participate in spring practice in 2007. He became the first player to commit to USC in the Class of 2007, but if he has his way more players of his caliber will be on the way. His best friend and teammate, Mark Barnes, also a member of the rivals, cbm top-100 prospect team, holds a very similar scholarship offer list and has said on numerous occasions that he would like to play with Gray in college. Gray mentioned several USC prospects by name and made references to players from southern California to south Florida during his announcement, sending a clear message to his fellow prospects. “I know that by myself I cannot win a championship and I am just a piece to a puzzle,” Gray said. “If all of you guys go to different programs, you too are just pieces to a puzzle.” “Imagine if all of us were to join together and commit to the same school; a school with the most-passionate and dedicated fans in the country; a school where we can get a great education; a place who sends players to the NFL; a school with a head coach who truly cares about the university and his players, and where we can compete for a championship from year to year. It would be special if we all chose to stay home and go to the University of South Carolina.” Comments on this story? Similarly, practices are a series of seamless transitions. “Everything has slowed down,” said sophomore receiver Kenny McKinley. “Last year, everything was a lot faster, and people tried to do too much. Coach expects everyone to know their assignments, but practice is easier now that we are used to it.” After being a Georgia loss away from being in the SEC championship last year, it would seem natural for expectations to be high. The players are starting to truly grasp Spurrier’s system, and USC has been included in several offseason Top-25 polls. However, Spurrier was careful not to set the bar too high. “The expectations will be very similar as far as our team goals,” he said. “We’re still probably a couple of years away from having a team that contends for the SEC. We will try to win six, seven, eight games. It would be easy.” Comments on this story?
