She was looking in the archives and found a study by Buxhoeveden. “I wanted money to do what I was already wanting to do. I thought if they want to give it, I’ll take it,” McWilliams said of the OUR’s grant offer. “Since I’m only doing this for one semester, a part of the money will be used as a lab stipend for me.” Morris said students have received up to $3,000, and the money can be divided in anv wav. “It’s all up the student and mentor,” she said, meaning that students can compensate themselves for time they invest in the research. Contrary** to popular belief, “undergraduate research” is not confined only to the hard sciences, Morris said. Fourth-year English student Kathleen Curtin will use her winnings to process a piece of poetry by English poet Edmund Spenser. Curtin will be transferring one canto of Spenser’s “The Faerie Queene,” about a thousand lines of poetry, to a Web site. She will also be converting select words in to hypertext, or manually linking particular words to other relevant Web sites. “I’ve already done the research, I’ve studied the words. Spenser’s language • is not only 16th century language, but he used language that was old fashioned even in his time,” she said. Curtin said her project is challenging. “For modern readers, it’s difficult language,” she said. Unfazed by the difficulty of the language, Curtin has begun work on the project Biocn • conuniiEOFRomi relationship between Bush and Rumsfeld. Biden said that to make Iraq an effective democracy, its government must be made up of representatives from all parties. The U.S. should work with the U.N. to create institutions of democracy instead of focusing on elections, he said. “Just having elections doesn’t make a democracy,” Biden said. “It’s the second, third, fourth elections.” The final part of Biden’s plan is to encourage better international relations. If the enemy builds a network of terrorists, the U.S. should build a network of allies to share intelligence, he said. Where the Bush doctrine says that the U.S. should follow its own agenda if other nations don’t support military action, Biden said the U.S. should build alliances and work with international organizations. “We need to recapture the totality of America’s strength,” Biden said. “We’ve squandered our military power. In addition to damaging foreign relations, Biden said the Iraq war has instilled in America a fear of war, and any future involvement . in foreign wars by this or future administrations would likely be met with political opposition internally. Its symbolism is irresistible to English majors.” Curtin will be working with English professor David Miller, one of four editors working on a new Oxford edition of the collected works of the poet. “What I’m doing is just a prototype of the larger project,” Curtin said. She will be working from home on her personal computer and will present her project at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research in Asheville, N.C., in April. -Part of her grant money will go to .cover the expenses of the conference, and part of the money will go to compensate Curtin for her time. “My project has several parts,” she said. “One is doing the hypertext and I’ll be paid for my time. The other is doing research for Dr. Miller. I’ll be helping him with his research and his undergraduate classes.” “Only some words (will be converted to hypertext), only words that I’ve decided to gloss or the name of a character; I’ll have a link,” Curtin said. She’ll be creating links to words that she feels needs further explanation. “Spenser used a lot of sources — classical texts, Italian literature, Chaucer. When I list one of these sources, the users can click on it instead of having to dig around in the library,” she said. “I’m still figuring out how to do that. I’ve got a lot to figure out.” Curtin said this project aligns with her immediate goals for next year. “I’m excited about the possibility of using technology in the humanities. In the fall I’ll be going to grad school. I want to continue using these skills. Technology can be a way of preserving texts and making them accessible. IT can also be a way for scholars to communicate with each other,” she said. Keshia Rice, first-year electronic journalism student and Capstone Scholar will be conducting a study about race and credibility in journalistic reporting. “I can’t say much about my project,” she said. Rice will be conducting a double blind study. “The focus will be the effect of a reporter’s race on the perceived credibility of news reporters.” Rice said she will mostly use interviews and questionnaires for her research, relying on student volunteers. “I plan on asking for volunteers,” she said. “I’ll put up flyers and announcements. I want to have volunteers watch different news segments that I’ve created. The money will go into making those segments, hiring reporters, things like that.” Morris said she feels the Magellan program is an excellent way for students to get a hands-on experience in their undergraduate education. For potential applicants, she recommends OUR’s Web site at www. sc.edu/OUR. “It has background and tips and hints on how to write proposals,” Morris said. “It has some sample proposals. Students are always welcome to contact me if they have questions. Morris said OUR is looking to fund student projects and wants students to be successful. Morris also recommends calling the Office of Undergraduate Research with questions regarding applying for the spring, summer or fall grants. “The process of writing a grant proposal is relatively unknown to students,” she said. “It is not something taught in the classroom. We are here to help.” Comments on this story?
