SHOUT • COOTinUCDPROOlS This is music and music making which cannot be simply ‘pegged’ into a single genre,” Yeo said. “The Tigers transcend labels as they perform with one mind, heart and spirit.” According to Carr, music has always been a part of his family, who have been playing spiritual music for “four or five generations.” “I started playing shout music years ago when I was 6,” Carr said. “God gives us abilities and I use it to his glory.” He said he formed the Tigers “because I knew our music was bigger than the church — let’s get out of the church walls.” He said the Tigers have been together about 15 years and have played all over the U.S. and Europe. Carr said he hopes to introduce audience members to a type of music they don’t often hear. “Your first take will be, ‘What is that? I like it,”’ he said. Between the musical performances at Carolina Shout, Kridel said students will be invited to testify, or “shout,” about how teachers have changed their lives. “There’s nothing like it in the United States,” Kridel said. Carolina Shout will be in the Russell House ballroom on Sunday, Feb. 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and the event is free and open to the public. For more information, call Kridel at 803-777-7257 or visit the Carolina Shout Web site at www.ed.sc.edu/ kridel/html/carolinashout. htm. Comments on this story? E-mail gamecockfeatures@gwm.sc. edu
