GRECH • CORTinUCD FROfTl 3 year in the 200-meter dash, during an indoor event in New York. Solomon has earned several accolades and is a rising star in the sport. The woman’s team is ranked No. 1 in the country, and it is consistently among the nation’s elite. The outdoor track season is just around the corner. The men and women of USC track and field are gearing up for what could be a championship season for both squads. When the weather starts getting warm, with winter receding into memory, there is something that just feels good about going out to the track and seeing the discus fly, the rows of hurdles in line on the track, or the sound of the starting gun firing, and seeing the runners try to will themselves past the finish line. The jumpers, leapers, throwers, sprinters, runners, vaulters and all of the other nicknames used to describe the athletes of track and field, produce an image of the sport that makes it seem the most basic and purest form of athletic competition that has ever existed. It is sport at its best. There is something very primal about wanting to know who is the fastest, the strongest, who can jump the greatest distance, or who has the endurance to outlast the competition. All of these questions are settled very easily in a track meet. The competitors solely determine the outcome with no need for referees, judges, or any other type of subjective officiating. When you are at a track meet, nothing could be more insignificant than which team has the most amount of points, and whether a team wins or loses the meet. Track and field is an individual sport at heart, with the exception of the relay events. Who can remember how many points the U.S. team tallied during the Athens games of 2004? Who doesn’t remember the absolute exhilaration in Justin Gatlin’s face as he crossed the finish line to win the 100-meter dash, earning the nickname “fastest man in the world” in the process? As an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee (ugh), I had seen that look in Justin Gatlin’s face before. Walking home from class one day I happened to notice that a track meet was taking place, so I decided to stop and watch. I watched Gatlin, my classmate, sprint past the competition en route to wins in the 100- and 200-meter dash. I had no idea that he would one day capture the fastest man title and Olympic gold. There is a pretty good chance that if you go out and watch a USC track meet then you might just see of one of your Gamecock classmates a few years before they capture fame and glory during the next Summer Olympic games in China.
