Another place for an offbeat date is children’s museum EdVenture. This place is so offbeat for college students that an employee for the museum declined an interview, saying, “We are for children 12 and younger.” But if they let you in without carding you, EdVenture offers endless possibilities for children of all ages. EdVenture, the South’s largest children’s museum, is also the home of Eddie, “the world’s largest child,” according to their answering machine message. He’s a 40-foot, 17.5-ton structure of a boy with an educational play set that tours you through various internal organs. He even has a slide that exits out the end of his digestive system. Imagine: exploring a 40-foot child’s nervous, circulatory and digestive systems with the one you love. Another must-see exhibit for your EdVenture date is the life-sized version of the game Operation, which offers a romantic possibility. In this game, you can take out the patient’s heart. If you think fast enough, after your date takes the heart, you can a make a clever pun about how your date stole your heart as well. And if you want Valentine’s Day to focus on more organs than the heart, be sure to check out the museum’s trivia game about gross facts of the human body. And if you’re one of those people who thinks snow is about the most romantic thing in the world but somehow ended up in Columbia, EdVenture is currently hosting the traveling exhibit “Snowville.” You can hold hands as fake snow falls from the ceiling and even share magical moments in their makeshift igloo. Conveniently enough, there is a McDonald’s located just down Gervais Street from EdVenture. So after you leave, on your own accord or not, you can settle down to a Happy Meal for two. If you like your Valentine’s Day with not only heart but soul, you and your date may want to head to the Art Bar on Feb. 14. A group of local DJ’s called SinDoolah will be hosting a night that the Art Bar’s Matt Bradley, one of SinDoolah’s DJ’s, said will play “mostly funk, soul and R&B from the ‘60s and ‘70s. James Brown, Ike and Tina, Eddie Bo and even contemporary artists such as Sharon Jones.” He also says' a night with a SinDoolah show involves a good deal of crowd participation. “This Valentine’s Day we are planning a big production including a mock dating game,” he said. “Romance is included, no charge.” So whether you and your date want to dance your heart away to Ike and'Tina or just slow dance to the smooth sounds of soul, be sure to check out SinDoolah at the Art Bar. And if inappropriate humor is your idea of an offbeat Valentine’s Day date, the Nickelodeon Theatre is showing Sarah Silverman’s stand-up comedy film “Jesus is Magic,” which includes such lines as, “Strippers should be role models for little girls.” t The film will be shown Feb. 14-16 at 7 p.m. and -9 p.m., as well as a 3 p.m. matinee show on Feb. 15. So if you want your Valentine’s Day date to stand out, whether by sneaking into children’s museums or disrobing with strangers, Columbia is sure to have something for you. Comments on this story? Doors open at 9 p.m. dj • connnuED FRonm Raleigh, N.C., and now to the New Brookland Tavern. DJ Vitae, DJ Poe and Pet are part of the goth and industrial events promotion team Sinnergy Productions. They help promote and provide entertainment for local goth and industrial occasions like “Pitch: Black,” “Symmetry” and Friday’s “Evilution.” Also performing is area rock band Skull Baby. Founded in 1994, Skull Baby has released three albums: “Sex, Death, and Rock and Roll”; “Give Birth”; and “Songs From a Wicked Heart.” The name, Skull Baby, comes from the title of a painting by singer Toby Bubonic. Also in the band are guitarist Jason, Ashleigh on keyboards, Jarrett Bury on bass and drummer China White. Skull Baby’s death rock sound comes from numerous and dynamic influences such as the Misfits, Joy Division, the Sisters of Mercy and Black Sabbath. “I really hate to say ‘gothic,’” said Jason. “People’s first response is that we scream and that it’s all a bunch of noise, and that’s not the case at all.” The band actually makes music that is very melodic and much more accessible than most goth bands. Skull Baby has played with national acts like Wednesday 13, Bile and Ghoultown, which features a former member of Marilyn Manson. The band is taking its music across the Southeast by booking shows regionally. The band’s members hope to have a future with Skull Baby. “Music is our lives,” said Jason. “We are all music lovers and musicians, so our goal is to be able to do what we love all the time.” The band wants to take its music around the world and play for as many people as possible. Skull Baby will join DJ Vitae, DJ Poe and guest Lord DJC for “Evilution” at New Brookland Tavern. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the show will start shortly after. All ages are welcome, $5 for over 21 and $7 for under. Comments on this story? While the majority of the film centers around Kenya questioning how much race really matters when it comes to the man she loves, the racially-oriented jokes are the shining moments of the film — they are not offensive but poke fun at how prevalent race still is in black and white mindsets, especially when it comes to interracial relationships. The jokes suggest that perhaps people might take the differences a bit too seriously. Kenya’s three friends, Cheryl, Suzette and Nedra — who arise periodically to discuss ensuing love matters — are delightful additions to the cast. The women are hilarious in their conversations on being single and professionally successful. Their first discussion in the film demonstrates how uptight they all are, and they agree they need to concentrate on relaxing, having fun and being open to love’s « possibilities. Donald Faison, known mostly for his “Scrubs” role, showcases his comedic talents as Kenya’s younger brother Nelson. As a typical young bachelor, Nelson has two characteristics audiences will find amusing — he always has a new girlfriend at various family events and is enamored with his precious Jaguar convertible. This movie offers a great cast, witty writing and a refreshingly good sense of humor. This is director Sanaa Hamri’s feature film debut, and while it’s obviously not Academy Award material, it is memorable among today’s mostly forgettable romantic comedies. Comments on this story?
