Utah) Daily Utah chronicle SALT LAKE CITY — This semester is almost over, and it seems to be going quickly. For some, myself included, this will be our last semester as undergraduates here at the University of Utah. Graduating is special for every student. For me, this will not be a typical day. I am a non-traditional student. I will be graduating at the young age of 30 (assuming I pass all my classes). I have found success learning in college that I did not find in high school. Approximately one in every 10 high school students drops out of school. I was one of those. This is the reason that I am now an advocate for better public education. The biggest difference I have found between high school and college is this: In high school, teachers seem too worried about giving placement tests or stressing basic education. Through certain professors at Salt Lake Community College and here at the U, I have learned to enjoy learning — to read John Locke not because it is assigned, but because of his significance to the world of philosophy, his stance on freedom, modern politics and humanistic thought. As of this December, I will have gone from high school dropout at the age of 16 to U alumnus — from failing the English section of my G.E.D the first time I took it to writing for The Chronicle.
