The foursome needed a vocalist and met 16-year-old Charlie Jackson online. Jackson posted a message on their online guest book asking if they needed a guitarist. When the band learned he could sing, he quickly became the band’s singer. Jackson can also play various instruments. After a series of lineup changes, the band felt it was time to change its name as well, settling on The Autumn Overcast instead of Forever and a Day and Upon a Tragic Ending. Jackson came up with the name for his acoustic side project, but after the band formed, decided to use the name for the other band instead. With the band in place and new material written, the band played its first show as The Autumn Overcast on Nov. 28, 2004, at New Brookland Tavern. The band performed as Forever and a Day the previous year on Sept. 27, 2003 at Uncle Doctors. From there, things fell into place, landing The Autumn Overcast shows in Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Greenville, Augusta and Ladson, as well as numerous places around Columbia. When compared to her usually extraordinary performances, Linney, a two-time Oscar-nominee, plays Bruner in a flat, detached manner. Until the final scenes of the movie, Wilkinson, a veteran British actor also once nominated for an Academy Award, resigns himself to giving Moore little emotion. Even Shohreh Aghdashloo, nominated for best supporting actress for “House of Sand and Fog,” doesn’t give her best performance as a defense witness. Unlike her performance in “House,” which commands the audiences’ attention with powerful emotion, Aghdashloo seems mechanical as anthropologist Dr. Adani. The only believable cast member is Jennifer Carpenter as Emily Rose. Carpenter is the perfect person to play the once healthy girl transformed into a shrieking, skeletal figure. While the movie shows the back-and-forth battle between the prosecutor and the defense, heaven and hell, faith and science, it seems to lack a fulfilling conclusion. The audience is left superficially satisfied with the scares and trial wrap-up but disappointed by the ( human drama. Despite its faults, the film intriguingly redefines the genre, marrying logic with the supernatural. Comments on this story?
