Volleyball falls to Clemson Tigers sweep No. 19 Gamecocks in Upstate showdown IDiquel Jacobs STAFF WRITER USC’s women’s volleyball team' fell 3-0 Tuesday night to in-state rival Clemson (30-25, 30-20, 30-28). The loss drops Carolina to 6-2, while Clemson improves to 3-2. For the fourth consecutive year, the home team has won the match between the Gamecocks and the Tigers. The last victory by a team on the opposition’s court was a No. 19 USC victory in 2001. The Gamecocks still lead the all time series 32-20, and the sweep marks the first time since 1997 that the Tigers swept the Gamecocks. “I really thought they played better in all facets of the game,” USC coach Nancy Somera said. “They took care of the ball better than we did. The game scores reflect it. Carolina’s hitting woes continued as the team hit .157 to Clemson’s .312. The Tigers outperformed Carolina in every statistical category including team blocks, the first time this season USC was beaten at the net. Junior Shonda Cole paced the Gamecocks offensively with 16 kills, and senior Sarah Morgan contributed 10 defensive digs. Morgan has posted double-digit digs in all matches except for one, a 3-0 sweep against Coastal Carolina. Somera, the eighth coach in program history, became the third coach to drop her first match against Clemson, evening the record for first-year coaches at 3-3. Terri Drake and Kim Hudson also dropped their first matches while Judy Martino, Elaine Mozingo and Bonnie Kenny posted victories against the Tigers during their first year at USC. As such, Berson is excited with the opportunity. “As we play these games, certain rivalries will just line up,” Berson said. “This is all part of being in the new situation of being in a conference. It will take a little bit of time, but we would probably develop rivalries with the better teams.” On competing and contending in Conference USA, Berson remained optimistic. “I think were capable of winning the league, but we’re also capable of being in the middle of the table.” Comments on this story? I know he feels I can help him and help the school at the same time.” After meeting with Hyman for what he said was around two hours, Fulton was very complimentary of the new head of USC athletics. “I really like him — not because he’s retaining me, but because I think he’s going to be a good athletic director,” Fulton said. “Maybe the best we’ve ever had.” Hyman said Fulton’s specific duties were discussed during the meeting, but are still being worked out. Contractual terms have also not been finalized. While serving as the Voice of the Gamecocks from 1952 to 1995, Fulton received numerous honors and awards. He was named South Carolina Broadcaster of the Year eight times and was inducted into USC’s Athletic Hall of Fame while still announcing in 1993. The S.C. Hall of Fame made Fulton its first non-coach or player inductee in 1990. USC retired a jersey in Fulton’s honor after he announced his retirement in 1995 with “The Voice” appearing across the back. Since being named special consultant, Fulton was responsible for the training of USC announcers Todd Ellis, Mike Morgan and Casey Manning.
