Track running for title By ALEX RILEY SPORTS EDITOR Members of the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams are gearing up for a shot at national glory, as competitions begin today in Sacramento, Calif., at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex for the NCAA National Championship. Events will run through Saturday. The Gamecocks’ opening event will be the first round preliminaries of the women’s i nn___I__ _ “v * Y. “We’re looking forward to competing at the NCAA Championship,” coach Curtis Frye said. “Our athletes are excited, they’re healthy and it’s going to be a great competition.” The women will be seeking their second title in three years, after being crowned USC’s first ever national champion in 2002. While junior Jenny Lake didn’t qualify for nationals, she did earn a spot on the Academic All-America team for District III. Lake, a member of the S.C. Honors College, was a member of the President’s List every semester at USC. Maslow was a two-time All Southern Conference goalkeeper and two-time member of the leagues Academic Honor Roll at Furman from 2001-2004. “He has been an outstanding goalkeeper and great competitor throughout his career, and he was a success both on the field and in the classroom. Alex will assume a wide range of responsibility in our program with special emphasis on training our goalkeepers,” Berson said. Maslow graduated from Furman with a bacholer’s degree in political science. Swim teams select Kraus as assistant After a four-year stint as a womens assistant at Miami University of Ohio, Phil Kraus joins Don Gibb’s staff at USC as an assistant to the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. Kraus’ duties while at Miami included work on recruiting and travel coordination, as well as heading up the sprint group. His work helped the RedHawks win the Mid-American Conference Championship four years in a row, posting a 49-5 overall record with a perfect 32-0 record in conference matches. Men’s golf gamers post-season honors Freshmen Mark Anderson continues to rake in the post season accolades, earning one of only five spots on the Golf Coaches’ Association of Ameiita's All-Freshmen team. Anderson also took home a spot on the PING All-Southeast Region Team, as well as earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors. “Mark Anderson had an incredible year,” coach Puggy Blackmon said. “Being one of just five freshmen named to the team is a prestigious honor. Mark has an outstanding future ahead of him if he continues to work hard.” 1 1UCC UlUtl V-JtlllICCUCIVa received post-season honors, as senior Alex Hamilton and juniors West Streib and Eirik Johar.sen were named to the Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars team. The honor was the second consecutive for Hamilton, while Streib and Johansen received scholar honors for the first time. Man apprehended for Cruse stabbing USC freshmen pitcher Andrew Cruse was stabbed in the chest June 1 around 1 a.m. in Five Points after a fight broke out over comments made about Cruse’s girlfriend. According to The State newspaper, police have arrested 25-year-old Columbia native John Michael Eckweiler, charging him with assault and battery with intent to kill. As a redshirt, Cruse was not allowed to travel with the Gamecocks to Atlanta for regional play and went out with friends to celebrate his 21st birthday.
