use Briefs Smith receives honor for academic record Junior catcher Ashley Smith earned Academic All-America honors from ESPN The Magazine after earning a 4.0 GPA in civil engineering, the highest in District III. The selection is Smiths second consecutive. NCAA denies Rathe sixth year of eligibility Gamecock quarterback Mike Rathe was denied a sixth-year of eligibility by the NCAA Student Athlete Reinstatement Staff. Rathe and his family said they will appeal the decision. Rathe, who led the Gamecocks on a game-winning touchdown drive against Kentucky last fall, said he will continue to prepare for the upcoming season until he is told otherwise. Simpson named to All-American team USC sophomore Ko Simpson has been tabbed as a Preseason First Team All-American by The Sporting News and is rated the nations top free safety. Simpson, the SEC’s Defensive Freshman of the Year last fall, will be the anchor for the Gamecocks’ secondary this year. Also rated with Simpson are senior offensive tackle Jabari Levey, the No. 7 offensive tackle in the country; junior Fred Bennett, the No. 14 cornerback; and redshirt senior Josh Brown, the No. 10 kicker. ■ RILEY Continued from page 10 A huge three-game sweep against LSU looked like it could be a turning point. The season-ending sweep of Kentucky and a blowout over Tennessee in the opening game of the SEC Tournament seemed like they could be the sparks to start a postseason run for the Gamecocks. Instead, USC lost its next two games in the tournament. Now the Gamecocks face a huge uphill battle, as they must face a great Michigan (41-17) team Friday. Win or lose, the Gamecocks face stiff competition in game two, USC to play host to ESPN’s SportsCenter The Gamecocks’ season opener with Central Florida has been moved to Sept. 1, and USC will play host to ESPN’s SportsCenter. The appearance of SportsCenter is part of ESPN’s 50 States in 50 Days tour. Former assistant to take job at Buffalo Former Gamecock assistant basketball coach Linda Hill MacDonald has taken the coaching job at Buffalo University. Hill-MacDonald’s career before her arrival in Columbia featured head-coaching stints at Temple and the Minnesota, as well as a trip to the 1998 Eastern Conference Championship as coach of the WNBA’s Cleveland Rockets. Hill MacDonald served as a Gamecock assistant from 2002-2005 and was an assistant coach for the Washington Mystics during the summer. Men’s golf finishes in 10th at regional USC’s men’s golf team came up short in its quest for a national title this season in the NCAA West Regional. The Gamecocks tied for 10 th place with Southern California and Pepperdine, forcing a round of playoffs. The Gamecocks faltered on the first hole, leaving them short of the NCAA Championships. as they face either the No. 2 national seed in Georgia Tech or the Furman Paladins, who swept Carolina in the regular season. Even if USC manages to come out of the Atlanta regional, their road to Omaha could face another familiar foe. Tennessee is playing host to a regional in Knoxville and is the favorite to move on to the second round. The Vols made easy work of the Gamecocks during the regular season, beating USC four of five times. So, that’s what lies ahead, Gamecock fans.
