USC changed its defense before last season, using quick trapping schemes to compensate for the team’s lack of size. At the beginning of the season, the new defense surprised opponents, and the Gamecocks started 13-1. With a quicker team, the Gamecocks’ defense this year should be just as impressive, though USC will not be sneaking up on anyone this season. The Gamecocks finished tied for third in the SEC East last season after being projected to finish last, and this year USC was picked to finish fourth in the SEC East, ahead of Georgia and Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks return nine players, including four seniors, and have added four new players. Incoming freshmen Stephen McDowell and Dwayne Day both averaged 20 points per game in their senior seasons in high school, and Day’s AAU team was No. 1 in the nation last summer. USC also added junior college transfers Antoine Tisby and Rocky Trice. Tisby last played at Allen County Community College in Kansas, where he averaged 17.7 points and 12.4 rebounds.
