SG senator mixes his ambition with aperture “The person taking the picture was squeezing a rubber ducky so Senator Thurmond would look at the camera,” Preston said. “I have tears rolling down my eyes in the picture. It was a really sad moment.” Because of his collection, Preston has had his picture taken with President Bush in the oval office and Mark Roscoe, head of Bush’s re-election committee, at the headquarters for the national Republican Party. Starting out with 15 pictures, Preston expanded his collection over the summer during his internship in Washington. Preston was selected as one of 12 students on a committee researching why most eligible young people do not vote in presidential elections. “A lot of students told us they weren’t voting because the government didn’t do anything for them,” Preston said. Preston also worked in close contact with many senators encouraging young people to vote. They went on a tour to 12 cities speaking with students about the importance of every vote. “Most students think their vote • _ / doesn’t count, but that’s not true,” Preston said. “We worked with different programs like Rock the Vote and Declare Yourself to find ways to get college students motivated.” Preston said he stays in touch with many members of the committee, such as Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R Tenn.; Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.; and Senate candidate Inez Tenenbaum, D S.C., whom Preston considers “one of my mentors.” Through Student Government, Preston is also trying to motivate USC students to get to the polls on Tuesday. He is serving as the election coordinator in his residence hall, registering students to vote and helping them contact tjieir elections offices for absentee ballots. Preston said he wants to be governor and someday be in Congress. “I’m the type of person that believes I was put on this earth for a certain reason, and my reason is to be a good political leader.” Comments on this story? Mayer said a joint curriculum isn’t at all in the students’ best interest because MUSC has a hospital-related teaching method while USC has a model emphasizing more laboratory instruction. He said the only motivation is to bring more research money to both universities, a goal he said is admirable. Pastides and other administrators will readily admit that they are interested in bringing in more money but also want to develop the strongest single program the state could offer. Mayer said he wants USC to to be involved in voter registration, and to be active in all the local campaigns. We’ve got two main goals. One is to get some of the independent vote and to make head way in the Republican strongholds in the state, and the other is to encourage voting in general,” Day said. Getting out the 18- to 24-year-old demographic to the polls was especially important, Day said, since that group usually lags behind others. Comments on this stoiy? Most of these kids walk back from Five Points. I would contend that the bigger problem lies with drinkers who are of age, because they are the ones mostly who go to Five Points, throw a few back and then drive home. Tommy Preston has been collecting pictures of himself with politicians he has met during the past two years. Preston, a second-year political science student, Preston has more than 100 framed photographs of different politicians. “I would like to hang all of them up on my wall, but I don’t have enough room,” Preston said. Preston decorated his dorm room with about 65 of the pictures, displaying the ones of the more recognizable leaders. The photographs are centered on a mounted copy of the U.S. Constitution, which “represents what we are in government,” Preston said. Preston has had his picture taken with George W. Bush, John Kerry, John Edwards, Hillary Clinton and many other prominent political figures. Preston’s favorite picture, however, is one taken of him with the late Sen. Strom Thurmond in July 2002.
