WELCOME TO BATES CAFE USC officials upset with Sodexho service House, a first-year residence hall. With this weekend being parents weekend, one of the busiest weekends of the year, students were forced to board shuttles to other on-campus restaurants. Sodexho, which according to its Web site is the largest food management company in the country, manages USC’s dining services and is suffering from the second C rating of a USC restaurant in three weeks. The Grand Market Place, the largest on campus restaurant, had a C rating earlier this month, ft The DHEC evaluation cited a number of P* discrepancies with the operation, including unclean surfaces, improper monitoring of food temperatures and maintenance issues. Management infractions included uncovered fluorescent lights and dry food sitting on crates instead of shelves. “We just have to continuously inspect to maintain our standards,” Scheffres said. “And we have learned that we will have to be more diligent with these inspections.” In addition to the changes, Scheffres said he would visit campus restaurants more in an attempt to remain visible to students. “We usually work with the employees to maintain these standards,” Scheffres said. “But we will be putting extra effort into doing that.” Scheffres said there are two restaurants on campus without managers and because of that, Scheffres has brought in some extra help from Sodexho. “With the Grand Market Place, we were able to do everything in house and were able to get everything done,” Scheffres said. “We are going to take these resources that we are using to be sure that ^ this never happens again.” Scheffres said the only permanent changes would be hiring more people at almost every establishment on campus, depending on restaurant size and hours of operation. “We would never want to endanger anyone, Scheffres said. “And we have learned a lot over these past few weeks.” Next week, Scheffres said, the Carolina Diner will have a special meal to thank students for being patient during the situation.
