The billy goat and Babe Ruth curses might never be lifted from these franchises. The interference by Steve Bartman and the collapse of Pedro last fall should only solidify this claim. As much as the’ Red Sox freeze up in the postseason, it is probably ap propriate that the best player in Red Sox history remains frozen in a lab instead of being buried or cre mated like the rest of society. How . else can you explain Bill Buckner’s P grounc^ ball or a black cat running out onto the field before a Cubs game in the 1960s? If I have learned one thing while obtaining my history degree hum USC, it is that history will re peat itself. In over 100 years, base ball history has repeated itself year in and year out with the same results for the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox and the Cubs are very talented and will make a run at the World Series, but when it is all said and done, both teams will fall short. No one reading this article has seen either team win a World Series, and there is no reason to really believe 2004 will be any dif ferent. Briefly Track teams race to 7 victories in Georgia The USC men’s and women’s track and field teams held their own against many post-collegiate athletes, compiling seven victories in the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend. For the women’s team, Lashinda Demus continued her dominance by winning the wom en’s 400-meter race with a time of 51.70 seconds. USC’s Stephanie Smith placed second in the event, ^ just two-tenths of a second behind W Demus. Shevon Stoddart was vic torious in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.35 seconds. Finally, the women’s team won both the 4xl00-meter and 4x400 meter relays with times of 44.63 and 3:37.41 seconds, respectively. For the men, Rodney Martin carried over his indoor success by winning the 200-meter race with a time of 20.90 seconds. Also victo rious was Chris Steddum in the pole vault and the 4xl00-meter re lay team with a time of 40.22 sec onds. The Gamecocks recorded a number of second-place finishes in the competition. Smith was sec ond in the 200-meter race. Khalilah Carpenter finished second in the 100-meter, while LaShay Shelton and Kemesha Whitmire finished second in the 880-meter and long jump, respectively. Softball CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 other score by Nance on another error, this time by catcher Ashley Smith. USC scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sev enth inning in a roundabout way with Cornett crossing the plate. Carolina had the bases loaded at that point with the tying run on first base, but right fielder Melissa Sandel was tagged out on a fielder’s choice to end the game. USC 4, UKO USC’s combination of good pitching and defense came through again Sunday, with Kentucky getting seven hits but not being able to score a run on the day. Stacey Johnson (11-4) pitched a complete game, allow ing seven hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Kentucky used three pitchers in the contest, with starting pitch er Meghan Cooper dropping to 5 4 with the loss. Cooper was pulled before the end of the first inning after allowing a two-run home run to Smith, and Prugh was brought in. Prugh and the Wildcats man aged to keep the Gamecocks away from home plate for the next few innings, until Prugh also gave up a two-run homer to Smith. Following a single by Hall, Prugh was taken out and Kendall came in to finish off the game. However, the damage was already done, and Kentucky couldn’t muster up any sort of a challenge at the end of the game. There is no rest for the weary, however, as Carolina trots back on the field Tuesday at home • against Georgia. The series starts with the first part of a double header at 5 p.m. The second part of the doubleheader will start around 7 p.m., and the final game of the series will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@gw~m.sc.edu WWW. daily game cock .com Qo/VhdlftwM AN HISTORIC RESIDENCE Efficiency . $525 One Bedroom $585 Two Bedroom $620 Rent includes all utilities and cable TV.
