Judging by the early sea son crowds, many other Gamecocks shared my perspective. So if you have a hangover from your March Madness, then have no fear. With such a young team and experienced coach, the Gamecocks will be back in the Big Dance real soon. The state of the rest of the conference seems tc suggest that now is the time foi the Gamecocks to enter the uppei echelon of the Southeasterr Conference in men’s basketball With promising talent and younj players who have far exceeded ex pectations thus far, NCAA first round losses might soon be a thini of the past. I told the team that might happen, but he still had to make the shots. He did.” The Memphis defense was also very effective, holding the Gamecocks to their lowest point total of the season. USC only had one player in double digits in scor ing, with Carlos Powell finishing with 11 points. The absence of an inside presence was also evident, as Carolina was outrebounded 32 Zl. Another theme for the game was the Tigers’ 3-point shooting. Memphis completed the game hit ting nine of its 23 3-point attempts. Carney himself hit six of his long range shots, and guard Anthony Rice was accountable for the other three shots. While 27 of Memphis’s 59 points were from behind the arc, USC only hit two of its 13 3 point shots. Surprisingly, the red hot Mike Boynton finished the game with no points on just two attempts from the field. The first-round exit by the Gamecocks continues a pattern for USC in recent history. Carolina has now lost in the first round of the 1974,1989,1997,1998 and 2004 tournaments. However, the team’s youthfulness holds promise for USC in the immediate future. . ' “I told the guys we’re going to be here next year,” forward Carlos Powell said. “I’m going to try to lead by example and just try to do the best that I can to take the team to the highest level we can go. ” / If USC is to return to the NCAA Tournament, it will have to do it without the experience and lead ership of five graduating seniors. Seniors Boynton, Kerbrell Brown and Rolando Howell accounted for over 26 of the Gamecocks’ 70.9 points per game this season. The game marked the last in the ca reers of the seniors, and there were bittersweet feelings among the group. “I was realizing that this is it for me,” Boynton said of his last game. “When I take this uniform off, it will be the last time I do it. I know the guys next year will take what we did this year and contin ue to improve on it.” Odom, voted SEC Coach of the Year for his work with this highly doubted squad, had strong feelings about the team’s season and of his four seniors. He hinted a few times in his press conference that this has been one of his most enjoyable coaching experiences. “The most difficult thing about this, is that in all probability, I’ll never have the opportunity to coach Mike Boynton, Kerbrell Brown, Ivan Howell and Sheldon Everett again,” he remarked. “They will go away as an extended part of our Gamecock family.” As this season came to an end, it was made clear by Odom that the program has not peaked, and will continue to strive for better things. “I look at this as a resting poiit on the journey we’re on; I doi’t look at this as the end,” an ojti- , mistic Odom said. “It’s a resthg point, and we’ll rest for about two weeks and then we’ll get started again.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@gwm.sc. edu I STERLING UNIVERSITY 1 *_, Shuttle to USC FREE Tanning Pool & Hot Tub Fitness Center *-IT Get ready for The Cup at You have your hat and the perfect dress, now you need the perfect face.
