Business fraternity launches recruitment Delta Sigma Pi plans to provide job experience, social activities BY HILARY SCHRAMM THE GAMECOCK USC’s Beta Gamma chapter of the business fraternity Delta ^ Sigma Pi will hold spring recruit jP ment events every night this week at the Business Administration building,.the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center, Harper College and the Russell House. The 60-member, coed fraternity open to all business and hospitali ty, retail and sport management students with a 3.0 GPA and at least two semesters left at USC, will host both business and social activities to give interested students an idea of what fraternity membership is like. These will include a profes sional dress fashion show, an in terview etiquette workshop, a guest speaker and a social event. “We plan the events to be fun but beneficial to future businesspeople, whether they join the fraternity or not,” said Mark Smither, third-year marketing management student and senior vice president. Throughout the year Delta Sigma Pi hosts events such as ca reer center sessions, guest speak ers and tours of local businesses to further its members’ profes sionalism. Last semester’s activi ties included a tour to the BMW plant in Greer and the compilation of a resume portfolio that was sent to area businesses and Delta Sigma Pi alumni. “The best part about the frater nity is the opportunity it gives to interact with people on a profes sional level as well as a social lev el,” Smither said. “It’s a great op portunity to see both sides of peo pie, wnicn is what you’ll be doing in the workplace.” The frater nity also pro motes a dis tinctly social atmosphere with retreats, semiformal and formal dances and an annual spring beach weekend. “Every spring we go to a retreat in Jekyll Island, Ga.,” third-year accounting student Anna Yelich said. “You get to meet people from all over the country. It’s another way to network while you’re hav ing fun.” Networking is a major part .of the business world, and Delta Sigma Fi pro vides many op portunities to be gin making con nections while still in college. “I joined it to build a network, because at this young of an age for a business major, that’s the most important thing to do,” said second-year finance student Ken Brown. “With over 200,000 members, Delta Sigma Pi is a very large and strong network.” Delta Sigma Pi plays an active role in the USC community through campus events, professor contacts and community service* both on campus and in the Columbia area. This semester the Beta Gamma chapter will cele brate its 75th year, and members are eager to include new members interested in their future careers. “If you’re someone who is self motivated and wants to be success ful in the business world, and you want to meet people who are like you, Delta Sigma Pi is the organi zation for you,” Brown said.
