Walvius looks to take team to next level BY JOEL WALLACE THEGAMECOCK - While Susan Walvius has en joyed much success during her tenure as the USC women’s bas ketball coach — including an ap pearance in the elite eight in the 2001-02 season—she says that this year, she is setting her sights on something higher: a national championship. “Our expectations are to com pete for a national champi onship, and nothing less will sat isfy our team this season,” said Walvius. Over the last two years, the Gamecocks have had four players drafted into the WNBA and have made the NCAA tournament both times. The Gamecocks return two starters from last year’s team along with a core of veteran play ers that will be complemented by a top-ten recruiting class. Once again, the Gamecocks have a team built around re cruiting from foreign countries, with six players hailing from na tions abroad, including seniors Cristina Ciocan and Kasia Roszak.
