The victim said someone stole his S.C. license plate. Estimated value: $12. Reporting officer: D.W. Friels. Tuesday, Oct. 21 l> LARCENY OF PURSE, SCHOOL OF MUSIC PARK BENCH AREA, 800 ASSEMBLY ST. The victim said she left her purse on a park b£nch in front of the School of Music as she participated in a cleanup activity. The victim e‘ said that on her return, the purse was gone. It was a Vera Bradley black and red purse, containing a cosmetic bag, a change purse, miscellaneous cosmetics, a student ID, a car key, apartment keys and a state key for entry into specific music school rooms. The victims said Angela Brooks has been harassing and threatening them. Victim two said Brooks brandished a knife on Oct. 22, at whichjioint the victims contacted the USC Police Department. Q SIMPLE POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA, NO HEAD LAMP ON BICYCLE, DEVINE AND GADSDEN STREETS Reporting officer E.L. Pereira saw Bobby Lee Merchant riding a bicycle south on Lincoln Street behind USC lot No. 2. Police said Merchant’s bicycle did not have a head lamp and was difficult to see. Police said when Merchant saw Pereira, he changed direction and cut through a parking lot in an attempt to get away. Police said Merchant was stopped by Pereira at the intersection of Devine and Gadsden streets. Police said when Merchant was asked if he had anything on him, he said there was marijuana in his sock. Pereira recovered a clear plastic bag with a substance believed to be marijuana from Merchant’s right sock. Merchant was arrested. Surrounded by a crowd of more than 1,700 people who’d come to see him and the movie’s stars, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ed Harris, Radio was led down the carpet by two women. They had all been at a pre movie pep rally that surprised Gooding, who plays Radio, and Harris, who plays former T.L. Hanna High School coach Harold Jones, who befriended the 57-year-old man nearly 30 years ago when Radio was hang ing around practices, imitating the players. NATION Florida woman’s case goes to court DUNEDIN, FLA. (AP) - The husband of a brain-damaged woman at the center of a legal tug of war between her family members will go to court next week to fight Gov. Jeb Bush’s order that reinserted her feed ing tube, the husband’s attor ney said Thursday. Michael Schiavo, husband of Terri Schiavo, will go back in court Monday to challenge the constitutionality of the gov ernor’s actions, attorney George Felos said. The legal battle is one of the nation’s longest and most con tentious right-to-die cases. Terri Schiavo has been in what doctors call a “persistent vege tative state” since 1990, when her heart stopped because of a chemical imbalance. Her eyes are open, but doctors say she has no consciousness. WORLD U.N. official wins human-rights prize STRASBOURG, FRANCE(AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his slain envoy to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. were awarded the European Union’s top human-rights prize on Thursday. The European Parliament awarded its 2003 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Annan “and all staff of the U.N. in special memory of Vieira de Mello and many oth er U.N. officials who have lost their lives in carrying out their work for peace in the world.” The EU assembly said in a statement the $58,000 prize would be awarded to Annan during a special sitting Jan. 29 in Brussels, Belgium.
