Ups for money-management: Make good credit decisions, cut extra costs Poor financial judgment can make college transition challenging KRT CAMPUS — The transition from high school to college is tough enough. Throw in the financial quandaries of being on your own for the first time, and it can be downright frustrating. The American Bankers Association Education Foundation has some money-management tips for col lege students forging out on their own: 1. Create a budget and stay organized. You'll never be able to manage your mon ey if you don't know how much goes in and out. Keep close track of how much you spend each month on food, books, enter tainment, clothing, etc. Figure out where you need to be more frugal and where you might need to spend more. To do this suc cessfully, hold on to ATM and store re ceipts, phone bills and tuition notices and keep them in labeled files. (Or at least stuff them in an envelope in your desk.) 2. Don't take the first offer that comes your way. When you get to school, banks and credit-card com panies will try to land your business immediately. Shop arouna ior me Desi aeai. Lion i worry; there will be plenty of opportunities. 3. You'll learn just as much from used books as from new ones. Used books are often in good shape (sometimes the previ ous owner never even cracked them open), and they're usually a bargain compared to new ones. 4. Don't bring your car to campus un less absolutely necessary. Parking fees, insurance premiums and the possibility of theft or damage will only put a dent in your wallet. 5. Thousands of college students graduate eacn year up to tneir eyeDaus m credit-card debt — don't be one of them. Watch what you spend and don't live be yond your means. (That goes for cash, too.) 6. Look for cheap forms of entertain ment —buy used clothing and books, vis it museums and shop for bargains. Put whatever you save in the bank. 7, 'Protect yourself from identity theft. Yet, for the same reason the Confederate naval jack never belonged on top of the State House, U.S. flags do not belong on the coffins of the Hunley sailors. The Hunley sailors were members of the Confederate navy and to bury these men under colors other than those of the Confederacy circa 1864 is simply historically inaccurate and silly. As usual, though, the issue comes down to money. The federal government has pro vided millions for the raising of the Hunley and the burial of the sailors, with conditions, of course. One of those conditions was that each sailor would be buried under a U.S. flag. Why should this be so odd, though, in a nation that learns of the Jamestown settle ment form the Disney movie “Pocahontas”? The Hunley flag issue is just one more ex ample in what looks good triumphing over what is correct.
