LEADING THE PACK PHOTO BY TRISHA SHADWELL/THE GAMECOCK Quarterback Dondrial Pinkins, expected to be a strong leader this year, gets the team ready for a play. Football CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 time to get in the pocket. "Right now, it’s a lot more thinking for us," senior corner back Dunta Robinson said. "Only thing that's-different than last year's defense is the formations and having to think a little bit more at corner." Cosh came to Carolina as the linebacker coach and has worked ■ • with USC standouts like Abraham, Kalimba Edwards, Shannon Wadley and Corey I Atkins. Cosh said some of this l years linebackers, like Ricardo l Hurley and Marcus Lawrence, • have the same skills and talents *■ as their predecessors. Although Cosh thinks there is a I lot of depth at this position, Holtz I said he came out of the spring | worried because of injuries and l inconsistencies. • "I don't know how tough we are ■ at linebacker," Holtz said. "I'm • concerned about linebacker be cause that's where toughness I starts on defense.” If worrying about a defensive change wasn't enough for Holtz, he must find some consistency on an offense filled with inexperi enced and young talent. Dondrial Pinkins will be called upon to lead the offense that is surronded by only one returning starter at re ceiver and little experience at run ning back. The defense's role will be to ad just quickly to a new style, one that Holtz said takes a year to get used to, and Cosh wants them to be a leading force in keeping the team in ball games. "The defense's job is to get the ball back as quickly as possible by taking it away or making them kick it away," Cosh said. He also said they have two goals. "Number one is to get the ball back and number two is to create field position and make them turn the ball over." Turnovers is a category that Cosh will need to improve on to have this defense work better than last season's. The Gamecocks ranked 10th in forced turnovers in the SEC last season. Cosh said it’s something he will discuss greatly with his defense, and he wants to teach better methods for getting the ball loose. Although it's too early to know how effective Cosh's new system will be, he has already gone to some pretty good sources for ad vice. During the offseason, the de fensive staff visited with the University of Southern California's head coach Pete Carroll, as well as Tampa Bay's defensive coordinator Monty Kiffin, for some strategies on how to run the 4-3 aggressively. Whatever might come of the Gamecock football team, it seems Cosh is right for leading these young men against the beasts of the SEC. Fortunately for USC, Cosh has a simple, yet passionate outlook on coaching. "A coach hopes he can make an impact on a young man's life not only in football but as a person. You prepare him for life and to handle whatever activity they take on. You hope that you impact that.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockudesk@hotmail.com _I Date Aug. 30 Sept. 6 Sept. 13 Sept. 20 Sept. 27 Oct. 11 Oct. 18 Oct. 25 Nov. 1 Nov. 6 Nov. 15 Nov. 22 Opponent Looisiana Lafayette Virginia Georgia UAB Tennessee Kentucky LSU Vanderbilt Ole Miss Arkansas FLoricb Clemson Location Columbia, S.C.
