PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE GAMECOCK Singer and songwriter Danielle Howie will play at USC on August 19. Howie is one of the more popular acts to go on. Concert CONTINUED FROM PAGE X Participating artists include singer-songwriters Josh Bowers and Brett Treacy, instrumental rock band Bolt, heavy garage rockers From Safety to Where, pop-rock bands Tigerbot Hesh, Guitar Show and Thomas Reed, country-influenced Hick’ry Hawkins, Danielle Howie performing without her band the Tantrums, and Charleston rock bands Evoka and the Working Title. Carolina Productions hopes to make it an annual event, but that de pends on its success this year. “That’s why we encourage people to come out, so next year they’ll be able to see the next wave and next breed of local artists,” Welker said. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. and runs until 9:30 p.m. with each artist playing 30 minute sets, except head liners the Working Title who will play for 45 minutes. Despite that, their selection is sol id, they’re easily accessible from r campus and both clerks to whom I talked seemed knowledgeable about music. Next we come to the big daddy. Manifest Disks and Tapes has hands-down the best music selec tion in Columbia. Apart from having every CD I was looking for, they generally had the com plete catalog (or close to it) of each artist as well. If you’re looking for an import, a single or an un signed band from Norway, Manifest is the place to look. On top of their new music selection, Manifest buys and sells used CDs and also has an excellent collec tion of everything from DVDs to Sigmund Freud action figures to products that are “for tobacco use only.” L The average CD cost was r $15.85, but that doesn’t factor into l the deals available in the used bins. The staff knows their stuff, though obviously some are going to be stronger in some genres than others. All of this makes it worth the trip over to Boozer Shopping Center to pay them a visit. Just try not to spend your whole paycheck at once. Finally, I visited the Wal-Mart on Forest Drive. True, it’s not ex actly a record store, but if you want to buy a CD while picking up underwear and a propane grill, who am I to say that’s wrong? In fact, Wal-Mart had the low est prices of all the stores I visit ed, checking in at $13.88 per disc. The downside to that is that they had only four of the seven test al bums. Missing were “Vertigo” (along with all other local music), Minor Threat’s Complete Discography, and A Love Supreme. I didn’t actually bother to ask anyone for help at Wal Mart — they seemed to have enough going on between Computers, DVD players, video games and stereo equipment.
