Cheney CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 According to Bush-Cheney spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt, “nothing was put on paper” about the fund-raiser, but peo ple other than those invited found out about the event. Betty Glad, the Olin D. Johnston professor of political science at USC, said that not publicizing the event was a smart move. “Well, it’s perfect ly legal,” she said. “If you’re way up ahead, you may not want to advertise your fund raising. I think it’s clever poli tics.” Outside the event, about 25 demonstrators chanted and car ried placards reading, "Impeach Cheney for Lying” and "Cheney is a War Profiteer.” Demonstrators first were told to conduct their protests at Maxcy Gregg Park, about four blocks away from the fund-rais er. After conferring with local police, the protesters were al lowed to stand on the sidewalk across the street from Averyt’s house. At the fund-raiser, Cheney posed for pictures with guests and spoke briefly about the war, the record of the Bush adminis tration and the importance of the 2004 election, according to those in attendance. "It wasn’t a political speech; it was more of here’s what’s at stake,” said U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. "It was a very thoughtful speech, I told him af terwards it was a perfect tone because all the people here are all business folks. They under stand politics. He made you think about why this election is so important. I was impressed.” Eddie Floyd, former chair man of the USC Board of Trustees, said he will sponsor a Bush-Cheney fund-raiser fea turing first lady Laura Bush at his Florence home in October. Former Democratic National Committee chairman and USC professor Don Fowler said he doesn’t understand the strategy the Bush campaign is using by not holding any pub lic events during the vice presi dent’s trip to Columbia. Fowler also said that Democratic pres idential contender Howard Dean’s campaign was “using the secretiveness of the Bush Cheney campaign as a tech nique for raising money for themselves.” Dean, the former governor of Vermont, used Cheney’s Columbia visit as a fund-raising benchmark over the weekend. The effort began Friday, when Dean’s Web site chal lenged donors to match the money that Cheney was plan ning to raise in South Carolina. Dean took in more than $500,000 over the Internet in a single weekend from more than 9,000 donors. Comments on this story? E-mail gamecockudeskfalhotmail.com.
