Allmond surpassed the former mark of 25 feet 7 inches with his jump of 26 feet 3.75 inch es. With the record in hand, Allmond also received his first All-American honor of his colle giate career. Bailey also stood out as the anchor leg on the 4x100 relay team that came in second to LSU. Joining Bailey on the squad were Ross, Whipple and Alexis Joyce. The quartet also achieved a school record, despite falling short at the NCAAs. Also earning top-five finishes for USC in the NCAA Championships were: in the women’s 4x400 relay, the team of Ross, Rashida Abdul-Malik, Shevon Stoddart and Tawana Watkins finished third; Ross fin ished third in the women’s 400 hurdles; and the third-place men’s 4x400 relay consisting of Kenneth Ferguson; Otukile Lekote, Jon Fortenberry and Harris. Chelsea Hammond earned All-American status with her lOth-place finish in the long jump, while Fred Townsend be came an All-American with his ninth-place finish in the de cathlon. Miki Barber closed out her outstanding USC career with her 20th All-American accolade, earning it in the preliminary heat of the 4x400 relay. Chris Hernandez (5-5) recorded the loss for Carolina, while Ryan Buscher McCally (7-2) al lowed only one run on six hits in the Cardinal victory. ■USC trailed the entire game and didn’t score until the seventh inning as the team struggled with runners in scoring position most of the game. Stanford struck early with one run in the first inning and three in the third. The Cardinal came right back in the fourth inning with a two-run triple by Johnny Ash, who punished the Gamecocks with a 3-for-5 per formance and three RBIs, and a sacrifice RBI by Carlos Quentin. After Stanford picked up two more runs in the seventh inning, Buscher hit his solo blast in the bottom half, and Carolina strung together a four-run inning in the eighth behind Tolleson’s two-run home run.
