He said reality is a wise choice “if you aren’t going to tear your self up every day.” “Some days I’ll wake up and be like, ‘Man, I’m never gonna be a ^ movie star’ — other days I wake up and say, ‘This is cool,”’ he said. They all lead private lives and have forgone college for something they believe is more authentic. Salvador Dali, the 20th-century surrealist painter, was proudest of his private sketches that he kept out of the spotlight, Shealey said. His one-week-old child is his own private sketch. “To me, it’s a great thing,” he said. These guys might be statistics, but they say it took more nerve to give up their dreams than to pur sue them. Creel explained that life is nat urally a trade-off—his choices de pend on the return. Shealey also agreed that he has judged his bad decisions by whether he lost more than he started with. Photographs and mir rors become not just images but revealing windows. Most of the characters appreciate the visu al, which surfaces in everything from Carmen’s photography to Fox’s surveillance to Warren’s free-association musings on the guerilla paintings. “Decaffeinated” is more than just a short narrative teeming with characters so off-the-wall that the book barely contains them. It succeeds because its cof fee-driven protagonist provides a character to sympathize with,while its Columbia setting grounds all the insanity. These two elements combine to make a novella that reads like the ad dled mind of a USC student fac ing final exams. Downtown Columbia blends with a caffeine-addled mind in a mix of the real and surreal. The book makes about as much sense as a paper written at 4 a.m., but it never attempts to conform to reality.. If read with this in mind, “Decaffeinated” is a fun and en gaging read that has sharp things to say about art, Columbia and the suspicious atmosphere of your favorite coffee house. “Decaffeinated” is available at The Happy Bookseller on Forest Drive for $3.
