PHILOSOPHY DEBATE WEEKLY ADVICE COLUMN: WHAT’S UP? Q: I started dating this girl last week. She’s really cute but I hard ly know her. On our first date, she started kissing me and wanted more. I couldn’t stop and we had sex. I had some misgivings that we had sex without knowing much about each other. I want to call her, and start all over again, and get to know her first. What should I do? A: First of all, it is refreshing to hear that a guy is more concerned about developing a relationship than notching another sexual con quest. You and your date have a different pace and values about sex; this is normal. I would en courage you to be true to yourself and express your needs and de sires openly. She may be very im pressed with your honesty and in terest in her beyond sex. If you maintain your integrity, you will quickly find out if she is worth pursuing. Q: I am completely out of con trol this semester. I have charged afterwards I feel empty and stressed out over finances. Please help! A: Consumerism tells us that material possessions will make us feel better about ourselves. Shopping is often used as a mech anism to gain control, feel better, and escape problems. Unfortunately, if done irresponsi bly, it can cause overwhelming stress. You need to honestly assess your finances and curtail unwise spending. If you cannot control your finances, this may be symp tomatic of a deep underlying prob lem such as depression. Hopefully, you will get some coun seling before you go bankrupt. Q: When my husband and I were dating, we made the decision that we would not have sex before we married. We kept true to that choice, and enjoyed being close without having intercourse. I re ally enjoyed those romantic mo ments, and thought sex was real lv going to be terrific once we fi fied with our sex life and doesn’t know why I’m complaining. A: You and your husband need to better understand each other’s sexual needs. Because your hus band takes less time to become aroused, he may not be aware that you are not ready for the “entree.” . Perhaps you and your husband can elevate arousal with roman tic baths, music, massages, or can dlelight dinners that lead to more passion when you have sex. Marriage is intimate, and we need to be brave enough to talk about intimate pleasures, without blam ing each other. Remember, you can come to the Counseling Center for couples therapy, to help you get started. - A Kan u kopy ediht? If this sentence bothers you, you might be Gamecock material.
