Shyatt CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 $180,000 buyout in his contract. “We appreciate everything Larry and his family have done for Clemson University and will help him any way we can after his future endeavors,” Phillips said. With the athletic department shelling out over $40 million to im prove Littlejohn Coliseum, Memorial Stadium and other fa cilities, the school may not have the money for a marquee coach. Shyatt was paid $420,000, the lowest salary for an ACC coach this season. Finding a new basketball coach will be the first high-profile job for Phillips who came to Clemson last year. Shyatt first came to Clemson in 1994 3s an assistant under Rick Barnes. He stayed for three ■seasons before heading off to be come head coach at Wyoming in 1997. Barnes left the Tigers for Texas a year later, and Shyatt jumped at the chance to take what he called a dream job. Shyatt personally paid, Wyoming $286,000 to buy out his contract so he could come to Clemson. “I have had a wonderful career at Clemson,” Shyatt said. “I want to tell all the players I have coached at Clemson how much I appreciate the effort they gave to our program.” The Tigers started this season at 9-0, before losing six of their first seven ACC games. They would win four of their next five in the league, then drop their next five, including a 72-61 loss to Florida State in the ACC tourna ment play-in game to end the sea son at 15-13. Clemson expected to make the NIT this year for the first time . since 1999. But the invitation didn’t come as Clemson became the first ACC team eligible for the NIT to be snubbed since the Tigers were left out in 1992. Including his one season at Wyoming, Shyatt is 89-93 in six season as a head coach. Rothenberg CONTINUED ROM PAGE 11 Michigan, which started slowly but became a force later on in the season, will not play in the post season, as it announced several months ago. This stems from alle gations that former players were receiving money payments from a recently deceased booster, all happening under the nose of for mer head coach Steve Fisher. Then there’s SfBonaventure, which forfeited several games, didn’t play its last two games at all and pulled itself out of the post season, despite being a sure con tender for its conference title. A player who had received an asso ciate’s degree at a community col lege was allowed to play, only to be deemed ineligible later. The school president resigned in the wake of these problems, after the school let the player attend the school and be part of the basket ball program. Head coach Jan Van Breda Kolff also stepped down from his position after the inci dent grew larger and larger. Is there a reason why college athletics programs can be so cor rupt? It seems that it takes greater patience and dedication these days to run a clean program, in stead of one that just trips itself up every so often. These four teams — Georgia, Fresno State, Michigan and St. Bonaventure — should all have had places in a postseason tour nament this year, but it won’t hap pen because coaches and univer sity administration didn’t do things the right way. It’s a little sad that the players, especially the seniors, won’t get to go out the way they would have liked to, but sometimes, older adults make decisions that nega tively affect young adults. It’s not the end of the world, though. Life goes on, and so will Rothenberg is a fourth-year sports and entertainment management student.
