CD REVIEWS Chevelle s music heaviest yet “WONDER WHAT’S NEXT” Chevelle ★★★★ out of ☆☆☆☆☆ BY MIKE LUKE THE HAMECOCK Chevelle has seen a boom of popularity, especially with the success of its current single, “The Red.” The band’s latest album, “Wonder What’s Next,” was re leased in Oct.ober and since then, MTV and MTV2 have supported the video for “The Red.” The song is also playing on rock radio sta tions across the country. Its previous album, “Point #1,” was successful with the song “Open/Point #1.” But “Wonder What’s Next” is a much darker, harder album. The “sophomore slump” is almost becoming an ex tinct term because so many bands like Chevelle have turned pressure and stress into pure songcraft. But the Christian band hasn’t happened on good times. Switching record companies from Squint to Epic resulted in person al problems and album delays. Perhaps the biggest test to Chevelle is that its members are all brothers. The album’s opener, “Family System,” sheds light on the band of brothers, proclaiming “Just grow up” along with the heaviest riffs the band has ever offered. “Send the Pain Below” reiterates the darker theme the album carries with lines such as “much like suf focating” used to describe emotion. “The Red” and the title track carry a certain helplessness in the lyrics. “An Evening with El Diablo” depicts a mental battle with the devil. Chevelle’s music is not laden with verbose songs and easy in terpretations. The music, heavier than ever, appears to always come first, and whatever emotion could not be conveyed is left to be per fected by the lyrics. Perhaps the Christian band’s mainstream success comes in metaphorical lyrics. Listeners are able to attach themselves to the music through whatever emotions they interpret for themselves. It started with the British Invasion, and more recently, Natalia Imbruglia from Australia, and even Rammstein, from Germany, have achieved success. Pacifier, a New Zealand-based band, is now gaining popularity in America. The band’s latest album, “Bulletproof,” is due out this month. Pacifier, formerly called Shihad, had been working hard, touring in Australia and New Zealand long before Arista Records signed them. With a successful label like Arista, however, the band brings its popularity overseas and is working just as hard, touring with Trust Company. Immediately, the title track and the second track “Semi Normal” introduce a powerful yet melodically driven band. John Toogood, lead singer and guitarist, condemns an “all bark, no bite” attitude on “Semi Normal.” Before you think Pacifier is just an angry band with “me dia friendly” appeal, the al bum’s dynamic changes with “Walls.” The song pleads that “it doesn’t matter where you are, there is life beyond the walls around you.” The next song, “Stranger,” quickly picks up the pace. “Comfort Me” and “Nothing,” the heav iest songs on the album, shed light on what a powerful and energetic band Pacifier is to see live. The other members of Pacifier are Phil Knight, Tom Larkin and Karl Kppenberger. Singer, Toogood, evidences a mature songwriting sense, sim ilar to Third Eye Blind, but with power. “My Mind’s Sedate” shows ♦ PACIFIER, SEE PAGE 7 www. rosewood market. com GREAT FOOD mm rim o§u ^mmmmmmm—mmmmmmm^.
