State colleges work to form Web-based catalog Plan would let students access other libraries BY JESSICA FOSTER THE GAMECOCK USC is continuing its partici pation in a statewide initiative to form a single Web-based library catalog by the end of the year. The initiative’s goal is to give ev ery college student in South Carolina access to the 11 million books in the 33 public and private colleges and universities throughout the state. “The overall objective is to try to make all the materials that are housed at all the public institu tions available to any student in South Carolina, regardless of the institution they may be enrolled in,” said Joe Boykin, dean of li I braries at Clemson University. To accomplish this, the univer sities would pool funds to buy databases similar to DISCUS, an electronic database that USC al ready offers to students. Students would be able to find out what books and resources are available, then request that the resources be sent to their own university li brary or, in some cases, be scanned and sent to their computer. Tom McNally, university li brarian for public service at USC, said the initiative began four years ago, but that it is getting more at tention now as universities are tak ing steps to put the plan into action. Though it has received support from the Partnership among South Carolina Academic Libraries, the project lacks funding. Boykin said he hopes the Legislature will provide funding to get the project off the ground. The initiative will probably cost a little over $5 million to complete, he said. David Cohen, dean of libraries at the College of Charleston, said there are several advantages to this col laboration between the state’s school libraries; one is that participating schools would receive better unit prices on software used for the Web based catalog than they would if they bought software individually. And students would benefit from greater access to books, journals and elec tronic information. “I really think it’s very much to the advantage of students,” Cohen said, “because it will bring to gether information about the col lections in 33 different libraries in one place.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockudesk@hotmail. com ——’ . ...
