BRIEFLY Lekote honored for SEC Challenge win South Carolina junior Otukile Lekote was named the SEC Male Athlete of the Week for track and field. Lekote received this honor for his efforts last week end at the SEC Challenge in Lexington, Ky. The Botswana native won the 800-meter run with an NCAA automatic qual ifyingtime of 1:46.88. The 2002 Indoor and Outdoor 800 champion currently has the top time in the SEC and in the world this indoor season. Lekote has won the 800 run in all three H meets he has competed in so far this season. This is Lekote's first Athlete of the Week award and South Carolina's first indoor award since Terrence Trammell won it Feb. 9,2000. The third-ranked Gamecock track and field teams will send split squads to three meets this weekend. Highlighting the week end is the Boston Indoor Games on Feb. 1 at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. Also oh Saturday, USC will send athletes to the Carolina Fast Times Meet in Chapel Hill, N.C., and to the East Tennessee State Invitational in Johnson - City, Tenn. Tanner receives Will Wynne Award USC head baseball coach Ray Tanner was awarded the pres tigious Will Wynne Award on Tuesday at the 53rd Annual Raleigh Hot Stove League Banquet. Tanner received an honor previously held by nu merous MLB Hall of Fame members, including Gaylord Perry, Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Hoyt Wilhelm and Enos Slaughter. The Raleigh Hot Stove League presents the Will Wynne Award to the North Carolinian who has contributed the most or had the biggest impact on baseball dur ing the previous year. Will Wynne was the first na tive of Wake County and one of the first North Carolinians to play major league baseball. Tanner, bom in Smithfield, N.C., earned the honor for the second time in his career. Tanner also received the Will Wynne Award in 1993. Tanner is entering his sev enth season as head baseball coach at USC. His six-year record at South Carolina is 274-113 with a win ning percentage of .708. His 15 year record as a collegiate head coach is 669-285-3. His overall winning percentage of .701 is al most identical to his percentage with the Gamecocks. Win starts women’s tennis season The 19th-ranked USC wom en's tennis team opened up the 2003 season with a 6-1 victory over the College of Charleston on Wednesday at the USC indoor athletic facility. In doubles, Carolina took all three matches easily from the Cougars. Kathy Boyanovich and Magda Wojdylo defeated Gabriela Moreira and Maike Hartung 8-1 in the number one doubles match, while Jodi Kenoyer and Catherine Brown took the number two match 8-1 over Rachel Magory and Lauren Stewart. In the number three doubles match, freshmen Danielle Wiggins and Justine Walsh defeated Whitney Malina and Emily Scatuorchio 8-2. In singles play, the Gamecocks took five of the six matches. Kathy Boyanovich, ranked 93rd in the nation, came back to win the last two sets 6-1 after losing the first set to Rachel Magory 6-3. In the number two match, Kenoyer defeated Moreira 6-1,6-2, while in match three, Wiggins defeated Hartung 6- 3,6-1. The number four and five matches saw Wojdylo defeat Stewart and Brown defeating Malina 6-3,7-5. The number six match was the only set back on the night for the Gamecocks as Scatuorchio defeated Walsh 6-4, 7- 5(10-5). The win was the 299th win in the career for head coach Arlo Elkins. The Gamecocks play at Furman on Feb. 5. Men’s tennis begins season vs. Winthrop The USC men's tennis team was honored with a No. 22 na tional ranking in the Omni Hotel National Rankings released Thursday. The nationally ranked Gamecocks will open the dual match season with doublehead er action against Winthrop and the College of Charleston begin ning at 10 a.m. at the USC Indoor Facility. The 2003 squad features three nationally ranked players: Seth Rose, Angelo Niculescu and Marcus Westman. Saturday's competition will begin with Winthrop versus USC at 10 a.m., followed by USC taking on the Cougars at 2 p.m. CLUB CORNER Bodybuilding and * Fitness Club The Bodybuilding and Fitness Club will hold the 24th annual Mr. and Ms. USC con test April 12.
