She adopted a child from China, and she says she believes it is important that they know where they came from and something about their language and heritage. Derrick also serves on the board at the Chinese Culture Center. She said having the center in Columbia is great be cause it offers an outlet for sup port for families with Chinese children. Walker said she was pleased with how things have progressed at the center. “There has been lots of com munity interest, and parents have especially been active,” she said.
