SG Secretary and fourth-year biology student Becky Floyd nei ther supported nor opposed the amendment, but she said the change will benefit turnout at the polls. “I think it probably will help voter turnout,” she said. Overall, voter turnout for the amendment was what the Election Commission expected. “It was a good number for a vote that didn’t have candidates out pushing for voters to partici pate,” Vickery said. “We’re look ing forward to having more time next semester to market elec tions. Hopefully, more people will run.” William Todd, a first-year his tory student, said he likes the idea of holding elections after spring break. “It’s a good thing,” he said. “It gives the student body more time to make a decision.” First-year marine-science stu dent Matt Severance did not vote, but he said the amendment will improve voter awareness. “I think that it will be beneficial to all students to become more in formed about the candidates run ning for offices,” he said. — Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockudesk@hotmail.com Surplus CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 jects, including a planned event similar to the Habitat for Humanity build on Greene Street. r aici aaiu xxc was “extremely happy” about the surplus. “One of rea sons I decided to run was Student Government just wasn’t address ing the issues and concerns of the students,” he said, and I think this is a good ex ample that we have been able to provide student organizations with more money and fulfill our campaign promises.” { j Another contribution to the surplus came when the Board of Trustees raised the student-activ ity fee in October. Patel said past student-body presidents have tried to get the fee raised by going through tim university’s Budget v/uiumincc uui that they were consistently de nied. “After four years, , there comes a time when you just have to say, ‘It’s not going to happen, and we have to find an other way to get it done, Patel said. This year, Patel went around the Budget Committee and used his seat on the Board of Trustees to present a presentation to the board during the summer. The board approved the increase on Oct. 17. Patel said past presidents have not taken this route because of a combination of intimidation and trying to go through the normal chain of command. “I think generally, it goes to the Budget Committee, and they were trying to adhere to the normal pro cedures of university policies,” Patel said. He said student organizations have been concerned recently about a lack of funding from SG. He said USC had 200 student orga nizations five years ago, compared with more than 300 registered now. “The same amount of money was being spread over a larger group of people,” he said. Isaac Scheer, president of the Alpha Phi Omega service frater nity, said he’s pleased with Patel’s administration and hopes the money will be given to organiza tions that are giving back to the university community. “I’ve been generally very pleased with what he’s done,” Scheer said. “He’s jvorking to make SG work for the students. He’s trying to keep it from just supporting itself, but he’s trying to give something back to the uni versity.” ' Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockudesk@hotmail.com -i “I’ve been generally very pleased with what he’s done.
