This is the third straight season that Carolina has made the NCAA Tournament, along with the pro gram’s 16th overall appearance. USC (11-7-1) will play Coastal Carolina in a first-round match at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Graveyard. The winner goes on to play Clemson. “We are very pleased to appear in the national tournament,” head coach Mark Berson said. “Our players have worked very hard all year and played a demanding schedule. I hope the hard knocks and the lessons we have learned from playing a tough schedule have given them valuable experi ence for the post season.” The Gamecocks started the 2002 season with a 7-0-1 record, but they stumbled after losing forward Ricky Quest, going 4-7-0 to close the regular season. Coastal Carolina defeated USC SO earlier this month, while Clemson took a 2-1 decision in double overtime last month. Comments on this story? Don’t quit on the Gamecocks and do something drastic, like watch the NBA. Of course, if we lose all of the games this weekend, like we did two years ago when Rod Gardner cheated, Duke beat the men’s soc cer team on a lucky penalty kick and Tennessee Tech embarrassed the men’s basketball team, then it’s OK to give up. At least until baseball season. Weekly Awards Pimp Daddy of the Week: Brad Banks Everyone, my self included, hyped Iowa State’s Seneca Wallace as the best quarter back in Iowa. Everyone ignored Banks and his Iowa Hawkeyes. And now it looks like they’re head ing to the Rose Bowl. What do we khow? Toolbox of the Week: Manute Bol I realize he’s just trying to make a dollar bill for his war-tom country by “playing” hockey, but it’s sad that the 7-foot-7 Bol is set tling to be a sideshow freak. He used to be a real athlete. On a side note, what happened to Gheorghe Muresan? Quote of the Week: “I’m a guy that wants to get my career off the ground and estab lish myself as a household name.” — Dallas Cowboys running back Troy Hambrick, a former Gamecock.
